Default Detecting Pre-Ignition/Detonation...I know this has been asked a million times

Detecting Pre-Ignition/Detonation...I know this has been asked a million times, although, so far the only way i have found without buying electronics(J&S Safeguard, knock sensor kits, etc) is using a stethoscope.

My question is, is it possible i could be pre ignition/detonating even though my plugs are in great shape with a nice chocolate color.

My guess is I still could have pre-ignition problems, although, detonation is probably pretty slim running that rich?>

Any ideas?
