damaged turbo, fix it , run it , new one ?
well i recently got my new setup finish (b18c4 , eagle rods, cp pistons .... )
got it up and running good with a basemap on ectune, took it the dyno , spent the day tuning it and was running great, made 385hp at 10psi , the turbo is garrett t3t04e 50trim .63 exhuast.
drove home , then the next day while out driving i was goin on and off boost seeing when the wheels would let loose. and then no boost, so i think ok ive blown a boost pipe off , cruise to stop and theres a rattling noise. cheap air filter i had fitted at a metal cap on the insde of the cone, it had came off and was balanced the compressor wheel nut., but has spun about and done damage.
im in the UK and things seem to cost a **** load more, do i trust a turbo repair place to fix it , or run it as is , or get a new one ?.
repair place seems a good idea but im sick of getting ripped off, its easy for them to say the shaft is damaged , blah blah blah and charge what they want.
ok now some pictures because every one loves pictures.

it will usually last for quite some time after a mistake like this. Many of us have been down this road before and learned the hard way.
obviously it's gonna be slightly unbalanced but it's your call. The right thing to do is send it out to have a new wheel put on it and re-balanced, but i guess that's up to how much you care. You can just let it go and eventually swap the turbo out for a similar unit.
it will die eventually...

maybe you can work over the damage on the wheel, have it rebalanced and run for awaile, in the mean time saving up cash for a new turbo.

If the shaft is bent, you'd hear it. The turbo would develope an obvious screaming sound (with moderate boost), which is high-pitched vibration. Think of an unbalanced tire - drive fast enough and its smooth but makes a nasty ruckus.
The damage is relatively even, and more from constant rubbing rather than striking a rock. A decent shop could polish the compressor wheel up, stick it on their balancing machine, and balance it assebled. That would probably be cheaper than replacing the compressor wheel and rebalancing it, and last just as long. If big chunks were missing, it would be a different story. You'd have an extremely hard time rebalancing it, and once its pushing air, the uneven airflow would further unbalance it. ATM it could be a cheap fix, and actually last 90-100% as long as an undamaged turbo.
BTW about 1-2 years ago someone had this same problem. The chrome cap to a cheap filter came loose and acted as a plug. It grazed the wheel just like yours, but I don't recall what the owner did afterwards. Maybe someone has a link.

Re: damaged turbo, fix it , run it , new one ?
thanks for the advice, still not sure what im gonna do, doubt there will be any damage to the shaft ,i stopped driving as soon as it happened and rolled to a stop. im not in a great rush to get it back on the road as the weather here in scotland is pretty nasty and is no fun wheel spinning everywhere.
the exchange rate from £ to $ is not so good now , gonna cost $200 more than it did 6 months ago if i do get a new turbo. think i will get it repaired , dont want to wreck the shaft if its out of balance.
