Icon2 d15z1/y8 turbo... good learning platform?

Well its come time to finally step up to the plate and go turbo on the hatch. I plan on building a vitara set up over the next couple months but i wanted to get a little experience before I boost a 2000 dollar investment.

What i wanted to do was put a spare y8 head on my z1 block which will lower the compression into the low to mid 8s and boost that set up to around 180 or so whp, which should be about the limits of the z1 rods. From what I read ( not alot of info on this) I should need a 4 wire o2 sensor, chipped p28 and larger injectors right??

Is this worth my time if done properly?????

Good platform to learn indeed! The y8's can take a lot of abuse though. You're not gonna be happy with 180 (probably why not a lot of info on this), and I personally think that low compression is unnecessary. I would invest in some fjt custom eagle rods which will give you the ideal turbo comp you need and go 3bar! Together, they're soul mates from hell >:-)

Im fine with the 180-200 hp for now. I just want to run the z1/y8 combo to learn on. Wouldnt the lower compression be a little more resistent to detonation?

And this isnt what i plan on putting the vitaras in btw. I plan doing a 75.5 vitara/ fj rod setup in a z6 or y8. I really just want some experiance so I dont blow a built engine up when it comes time

yes the lower compression will be more det resistant, but so is a good tune. with the advancements in tuning tech now days most people are staying around factory comp on builds. remember you lose power by lowering the comp and have to make it up with more boost.

Im not too worried about it with the z1 block/y8 head combo havin that low of a compression, mainly because im only gonna run the set up for a couple months, but what you said about the low compression being slow as hell up until boost makes me think maybe i should go for at least 9:1 compression forged pistons on the actual built block im gonna be putting together on the side...

Don't be scared to blow a dseries. In my case, I didn't bother worrying because I had a spare if it happened. Sounds like you do to. I just got sick and tired of people telling me what I can and can't do so I started doing my own things and put them to the test. As long as you know what you're doing, (for example: taking a close look at the map you're running and do a quick check to make sure everything looks right), you'll be ok. I've ran a lot of custom basemaps on my so called "ebay" setup. This has been going on since 2007, first with a 50ar, then 60 and now 70 compressor. I have yet to blow that engine. The only thing that broke was the manifold and the clutch is slowly starting to slip, but these parts were only engaged with testing in mind. I braced that manifold well but still cracked the #1 runner because it's too much powa lol and because of this crazy clutch that chattered in the beginning lol (engine mounts were factory). Still running strong though. Never seen dyno. Good luck with your project.

true true, blow it up and its a 400 dollar mistake. I kinda have a good idea on how to go about the whole turbo setup and all. I was aking wether anybody has done a y8 head on a z1 block and boosted it.
