Crower Billet Rods and OEM BEARINGS
Hi guys! Just speaking to Earl ( ) what a dude! Situation is this... I am in the middle of buildling a B18C4 (equivalent to the C1) and having problems with the rod bearings. The old ones were binned years ago and now i'm on a third set (second set was ACL/Calico coated ones), but this time I have gone the whole way and got Crower Billet rods and CP Pistons. So I bought OEM bearings. Currently I selected 'green dot' and plastigauged them, basically the readings busted off the scale!!!! I'm talking that the plastigauge was shaped like a 'football' if you know what i mean
Earl is suggesting obviously that the bearings need to go thinner.. But by how much? I mean there are yellows, pinks and some other colour I think. Another suggestion Earl made was to skim the RODS themselves by another half of a thousanths and then plonk the greens back on and plastigauge again... Is there another option? i.e. get the RIGHT bearings without spending another arm and a leg and also waiting on shipping etc (my car has been off the road for 3 months now) Also, I don't think I can find an engineer I can trust to skim my rods
What should I do next? I have $630 rods that are sitting here doing nothing along with a full set OEM Honda bearings (that cost me £400 --->$600 go figure!)
HELP!
Are Crowers generally a pain in the ***??? I see you guys normally go for 'greens' but not in my case. Nothing is simple in England..

i'm in the same situation as well. i had to go to the thinnest oem bearing which are the red...and the clearance was still a bit tight at .001in. i think i will be fine. if i were you, i would buy a set of red bearings and plastigauge them to see what your clearance are...if you're still too tight i would take the rods to a reputable machine shop and resize the rods. i wouldn't mess with cutting the bearings...unless you knew what you were doing.

Do this:
Take your crank, rods, and bearings to a machine shop.
Tell him you need to find .0015" Clearance.
Your Bearings and Crank will be static variables, and he will open the rods up to make everything fit together nicely.
Best way to do it.

Re: Crower Billet Rods and OEM BEARINGS (Suprdave)
Unfortunately in the UK, we don't have a machine shop competent enough to do it! Not that I trust anyway... I have tried no end to look for one here, but I am resorting to buy some more bearings... (I got a good deal for them for once but thanks to HT!) I'm not confident to take the gamble on yellow dots though..
**** this is really getting me down..
Is there a sure way to determine what dot colour???

Well to be fair it was slightly off the prescribed Plaistigauge pack.. It honestly looks like it need to be about another 1/2 thou thinner ...
Any ideas? I've called 10 engineers in the UK today.. Nobody wants to touch the rods...

Re: Crower Billet Rods and OEM BEARINGS (G"UNIT)
The best way we can help you is:
1. you tell us what color of the bearings you use
2. take pictures for each measurement for the rods.
This way, we can guess what size of bearings you need.
