crazy timing issue with my obd1 converted y8 with uberdata...possibly the cause of my detonation.
Well i had a zex z6 59300 cam in my boosted y8. With the cam in there and set to where i felt best i could only get 12 degrees(base ignition timing for a y8) with the distributor fully advanced. I always guessed this was just because of the cam. Now i tried putting my stock cam back in and for some reason I have to do the same thing in order to get my ignition timing at 12 degrees. I had to advance the distributor all the way and its at about 11.5 degrees. Why is it that with my stock cam in I have to advance it all the way? I double checked my cam timing and its dead on. I remember that before i put the zex cam in and boosted my car i used to be able to advance my distributor all the way to 16 degrees without even having to advance it close to all the way. What the heck is going on? Is it something with uberdata ???

i didn't swap any distributor. The only thing you need for an obd1 conversion is a conversion harness for your ecu and an obd1 ecu. I was just on the uberdata forums and a guy on their said his did the same thing when switching to obd1 so apparantely its just and obd1 conversion problem.

Re: crazy timing issue with my obd1 converted y8 with uberdata...possibly the cause of my detonation
so does anybody think this has something to do with my detonation problems? I am detonating with a total timing of only about 15 degrees under boost and an afr in the high 11's to high 10's. HT tuners I need your help.

from my research into b-series obd-1 conversions, you need a obd-1 distributer. the obd-0 dist, wont work properly with the obd-1 computer. with that said, it would be wise to take a scroll through the search archives. i spent a bit of time and couldnt come up with your answer(for d-series), but if you dig a little you will find it. good luck.

Re: crazy timing issue with my obd1 converted y8 with uberdata...possibly the cause of my detonation
no i have an obd2-1 conversion...not obd0-1. I should be able to use my obd2 dizzy. What i'm most concerned with now is the detonation i'm experiencing. Is this caused becasue my dizzy is advanced all the way? Timing at idle still reads 12. Would it help if I set the dizzy in the middle and advanced the timing in uberdata until it read 12 at the dizzy for idle? I'm assuming that since it reads 12 each way that there is no difference.

*shrug* sounds to me like you're a tooth off on the cam gear. Do you have a stock ecu you can throw in?

That seems really odd, only a little timing, and rich fuel mixture. . How is it possible that you are detonating? Alot of oil in the gas mixture for some reason?
Low octane fuel? Those are the only things I can think of. .

yea the detonation thing is confusing me. The fuel is 93 octane and i've tried different gas stations.

i'm not a tooth off. Apparantely its just a problem with 0bd2-1 conversions. I've asked around and a few other people are having this problem including Hella JDM.

What cam gear are you using? Is it made for a D16Z6 or a D16Y8? If its for a D16Z6, chances are the timing marks for lining up your timing belt are in the wrong place.

Re: crazy timing issue with my obd1 converted y8 with uberdata...possibly the cause of my detonation
right now i'm using the stock y8 cam gear. My cam timing is dead on. If it were a full tooth off it would feel like crap. I used to have that zex cam in with a z6 str cam gear and i still needed to advance the dizzy all the way. I know that its just an obd1 conversion thing now. Anyone have any opinions on the detonation problem though?

Re: crazy timing issue with my obd1 converted y8 with uberdata...possibly the cause of my detonation
so u may need to swap in a obd-1 dizzy so it would be true obd-1
I don't have any solutions but i can tell u that when i swapped in my stock p28 in my y8
the cars rpms would drop to like 300 rpms before it shut off. It did intermittenly (sp) until i took it out

Re: crazy timing issue with my obd1 converted y8 with uberdata...possibly the cause of my detonation
hmm i don't have any problems with the rpms dropping like that. I can fix the base timing by advancing timing in uberdata and setting the dizzy back, but i just need to know if this has anything to do with my detonation.
