Default Cracked a Sleeve on a Stock B18B

I was at the track on friday, not running particularly hard, the pass before I had ran a peak of only like 10lbs of boost, but i've taken the block a lot higher than that before. The next pass, when watching it on video, i was smoking a little bit, from a cracked sleeve, then at about the end of the 1320 I blew off my upper radiator hose from increased pressure in the coolant system.

So I pulled apart my block, with the intention that it was the head gasket, but it was fine. The pistsons were in great shape, and the cylinder walls were okay, #3 had a little pistons to wall contact, and #2 might have, i couldn't tell, it was all fucked up from the crack in its wall. Any idea why my cylinder walls would crack before my pistons or rods would go? I'll have pics up reallly soon, just got to upload them.

Yummy

I tried to fix it, but someone said it wouldn't hold...

Cracking sleeves is GRRREAT

Anyone wanna guess why my sleeve cracked and not my pistons or rods?

what was your fuel management?

Looks to me like you were running lean by the way the scraps on the cylinder wall. Take the pistons out and look at the side of them.

I think the duct tape will work, it works for everything else. I only use it when I don't have time to wait for the jb weld to dry.

What RPM did you take the motor up to at the track?

i will guess your timing was off....i remember messin with my friends distributor on his ls/vtec with skunk stage2 the night b4 the track event....car was idling funny so i just slightly move the distributor and then it ran smooth.....at the track he ran off DTR header and race gas and swapped in a friend chipped p28 skunk programn i guess his timing got all messed up and he cracked a sleeve......but also dropped a valve .....

did you dropped ? a valve or anything............

sorry to hear

My redline was at 7200, I was using uberdata for my fuel managment. I had a pretty conservative .75degree/lb retard going, although under 7lbs i was using a step up retard (less retard at the lesser boost). I didn't have time to look at my wideband at the track, but i street tuned it before the track and it was running pretty well, low 12:1's. I dont think i dropped a valve from what i've seen thus far.

The motor had 112k miles on it and had been through a few lean situations while tuning over the past few months, so who knows when the crack started, and when the piston to wall contact happend.

scaring on the sleeves would make me think allot of heat was a factor. do you have an egt??? although your air/fuel was good, there was allot of heat.

maybee it was scared up from an old fuel setup???

thanks. I did used to run nitrous on it... that might had something to do with it. then again, its probably a combination of my shitty tunes over time.

Damn Alex, that sucks. Guess you get to build your own block now, or something close.

What did you run on your first run anyway....?

That's pretty typical. The stock GSR block in the car I rebuilt was running 12-15psi w/ aem ems... fully tuned, with stock rods, and JE pistons. It held up to serious abuse for over a year, but finally the stock sleeve just delaminated and let go. No detonation or anything, ... I think they just build up enough heat and pressure, and just pop/fail.

cool, thanks for the replys. anyone wanna guess why i have what seems to be pretty descent piston to wall contact on cylinder #3, and none on any other? Doesn't cylinder #3 run the leanest or something?

it sounds like you got good use out of the block with f/i in the past, it might have just started to let go and slowly got worse over time. your timing sounds like it was fine, the a/f wasnt lean, but wasnt conservative rich imo either.

good luck with your next build
