Compressor Surge
 

I think I am experiencing compressor surge with my turbo setup...I hear a sort of "che, che" before the BOV goes off...I put the BOV almost all the way to loose and still hear it...but at above 3500 RPM I do not hear it as much or not at all...at first I thought it was the BOV at low boost, but i hear the "che, che" before the BOV goes off after listening more closely to it...so is this compressor surge...and what are some possible ways to correct it...thanks in advance...

could be TOO loose which would cause flutter. I think thats what you are hearing...

I just fixed this problem today. It turns out I needed at least 1/4" vac lien ot the bov, and a REALLY good vacuum source. I tee'd it off of the 11/32" vacuum line to the master cylinder, works perfect now https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Its not the BOV...since I hear the flutter before the BOV goes off...

Here's some more info...when I floor it...the BOV seems to go off fine /w no compressor surge...at low boost, 1-3psi and you let off the throttle you hear the "cha cha" fluttering noise, then the BOV...it never happened before...just out of the blue one day it started...turbo gone bad???...

I've checked and changed out a bunch of vacumn lines to see if that helped...it didnt and I also took off the intercooler and sprayed it down and washed it to see if it was clogged somewhere....let it dry off for a day and put it back in...didn't help the problem at all either....

so anyone /w any suggestions...on whats wrong or how to solve the problem...

If its fluttering b4 the bov goes off, then the BOV isnt doing it job. What size vac line are u using for the bov, and where did u get the vacuum from?

Might also be a vacuum leak?

i have the same problem. if any of you guys want to confirm the sound, dl my video hosted by booste-hybrid http://www.boosted-hybrid.com/red_civic.mpg. You should be able to hear it when there's a shift.

I am pretty sure its the vacuum source. I'm either going to retap it or get the vacuum manifold. In either case I was told really not to worry about it since it shouldn't cause damage but obviously it gets annoying.

prophet, tee it off of the brake booster/master cylinder! I used to hack that problem, and the brke oboster line fixed it completely! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

What bov are you using?
Like uberteg said it's a weak vacuum souce causing that chattering/ompressor surge. i had the same problem when i installed my new turbo (why it happend then?) i moved to a stronger vacuum source (pcv valve) and now it makes the nice psst sound with no chatter or surge. spooled b16 had the same problem too.........

ok...vacumn source may be it...but it DID NOT do this when I had it hooked up to the same vacumn source before...it was fine for 2 months or so and started up a week and a half ago...therefore I thought it was a vacumn leak hence leading me to change out a bunch of vacumn lines which didn't help me...then I thought maybe IC...so took it out...sprayed it down...let it dry up...still no help...

using the greddy type s BOV...

I'll try tapping it to another vacumn source before I drive off next time...see if it helps...

All i can say is try anything and everything that people recomend to you. Anything is possible. my car is living proof that anything is possible..what works for one may not work for another...example
1: with 310cc injectors most run a 8:1 fmu and run fine. my car on the other hand won't run rite with a 8:1 i have to run a 4:1 and use a sfc to lean it out even more to get my air/fuel ratio aroud 12:1.
with my old t3 turbo i was runing a 8:1 with no problem, swapped it out for a t3t4 now it's way to rich, plus i had my bov t-'d off of my fpr..worked fine then one day decided that it didn't want to work anymore, moved to the pcv valve vauum source and now it rus better then ever......some things don't make sense so try anything....btw this isn't directed towards you, but everybody in general.

what turbo are you running? a big compressor will surge easier than a smaller one because the surge line is more towards the right.

I'm only running a T25...small turbo that shouldn't be surging at all...therefore I'm really at a lost...I'm going to try the PCV Valve T tomorrow...

brake booster line may be a bi easier due to its location, but both the pcv and brake booster are excellant sources for vacuum https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/embeer.gif

turbo size doesn't determin if you will have compressor surge or not, if your bov isn't working properly you will have compressor surge reguardless if you have a t25 or a t4 60-1.
