compression low in #3 but no smoke what so ever?????
well compression was good across the board except #3 which was 60 THEN POURED CAP FULL OF OIL IN AND THE COMPRESSION WENT TO 120. im tearing the motor down next week to install pistons and wanted to make sure the rings were bad. the car does not smoke an ounce, so i just want to be sure what the problem is before next weekend

It went from 60- 120 on on a b16?? When i did mine the lowest cylinder was 125 or so. now im at 230,230,225,220. your #'s hardly matter since you said your going with new pistons so hone it slap it back together and check your #'s again.

YEA WELL THERES NO POINT OF TEARING DOWN THE MOTOR IF THE RINGS ARENT BAD. COULD IT BE SOMETHING ELSE? TI WAS 180 ACROSS THE BOARD EXCEPT #3 WHICH WAS 60 BEFORE THE CAP FULL OF OIL WAS PUT IN THEN SHOT TO 120

you could have a bent valve in that cylinder. I've seen even good cylinders shoot compression up some when putting oil in. If theres no smoke or blowby that would be my bet.

It could also be a burnt valve, in which case it wouldn't make much noise. But i third the notion for doing a leak down test. I don't even waste my time with compression tests anymore. Leak down tests will actually tell you something.

I know the snap-on guy has one.
I once asked this question at a parts store, and they looked at me with a blank stare. So parts stores might have them that you can rent out, if they know what you are talking about.

yea true compression tests will show up good half the time when something is terribly wrong. Although in my experience with a bent valve it will still read some pretty shitty compression on a compression test.

compression ring though dealin' and oil control ring still dealing = no smoke and shitty compression. when you put the oil in it sealed and bumped it up to 120. when you do a leak down you are gonna find the prob is with the rings. if you have a burn valve or something of that nature it would not have held 120psi. if the compression numbers had stayed around 60psi with the oil in there then i would look at the head as your culprit. but i am willing to bet money its in the block.
