Check out the Garrett turbocharger on this old race car
This is the 1966 Indy car of Bobby Grim. It ran 500 miles at high boost and high speeds using a Garrett turbo. It used the Offenhauser 4 cylinder engine designed in the 1930's. Cubic inches was about 220.
Lots of familiar stickers on this car
Check this motor out. It had dual overhead cams with 4 valves per cylinder (sound familiar?). The really crazy thing was the head and block were one piece...no head gaskets to blow. It dominated Indy racing in the 50's and 60's. When Ford came out with their V-8 engine and started running faster than Offy, the Meyer Drake Offy guys started turbocharging their 4 cylinder engines. They ran it very fat and put a rumored 40 lbs of boost in it while still using a very high compression ratio from when they were all motor. Since it did not have a head gasket, no worries. It ran so fast that Ford pulled out of Indy because the 4cyl was beating their V-8 motors.
Note the roots supercharger on this pre turbo model
The downfall of this motor was when Indy put in gas mileage rules and gave each car X amount of gallons to run the race. They had to lean out the Offy so bad (to have enough gas to finish the race) that the engine would just plain run too hot and burn up. That was the end of the Offy era.

Now if only my history class at college taught stuff like this I wouldn't fall asleep all the time
Good stuff, my bro is a Ford guy so he'll get a kick out of seeing this

mmm bias-ply race tires.
lots of crazy engines back in the day. they actually tried mechanical fuel injection on those offy engines before quitting all together but they had more problems with the injection than the blow through carb setup. and they used single barrel carbs at that!

Duh! That way, you don't need to run 1-2 laps to warm up the tires! Just rev it and go!
Awesome! Love the 1 piece head/motor design. Hmmmmm, no head gasket eh?
