Chance EG Build Thread - Restomod With Arashi Turbo, Tucked AC, Etc

1993 Civic Si
Work on this car has been in motion at various speeds for the last 7 years, as I juggled other things in my life like moving, establishing a career, relationships, etc. I first started putting plans together for this build over 10 years ago, when I previously had a bolt-on GSR swapped white CX hatch. As with any major project, there are times I'm excited for what I have, but other long stretches where I mostly just feel stressed and anxious. I'm definitely ready to finish this Civic.

The goal for this car is to build a reliable and effective weekend warrior & track combo car, with emphasis on keeping the car COMPLETE and approaching all jobs as meticulously as possible (for an amateur enthusiast working in a home garage). I also have a mental goal for how I want the car to look aesthetically, by no means will it be an immaculate show car (nor do I want it to be), but good enough for a local meet. As I've gotten older I've become more and more sour at how many people trash these cars with "budget" build bullcrap, doing things like gutting the entire car or "deleting" any system that's not related to moving the car forward. These chassis offer amazing potential, and it really pisses me off how many people go completely half assed with them and don't bring them justice, even worse often ruining the car for any future buyers.

In my case it's VERY safe to say that I've gone to the other extreme and spent more money than was necessary, on parts that I'm sure I didn't need, but this was for peace of mind as well as to complete the car in the image that I had. I also realize that the market for these cars is constantly shrinking, so if there was an aftermarket gizmo that looked appealing to me, I bought it before they're gone. This build already consists of many parts that are discontinued, from companies no longer in existence, etc.

Unfortunately I don't have many pictures of the car when I first purchased it. It had been in a fender bender and the passenger corner light was held in with duct tape, the sunroof had been leaking and had a fried motor so they RTV'd it shut, the paint was awful and peeling away, etc. The previous owner also managed to completely mangle multiple factory wire harnesses through some of the worst mod installation attempts I've ever seen, and also broke mounting tabs inside the dash. I certainly bought into an uphill battle, but have few regrets considering how hard it is to find EG Si's these days.

Almost everything on this car has been done by myself, or with the help of my dad. My dad doesn't have a lot of experience with cars, but has spent a lot of time doing home repairs, renovations, and other general DIY projects so he's had some very valuable insight at various points with the best way to mount or route certain things, etc. The only things on the car that haven't been done in my own garage is the body paint job, and the internal engine assembly (built by "Honda Mike" in San Antonio).

Pictures are in no particular order in terms of when they were taken. Also note that I will try to take some pictures for this thread, but I've always been awful at documenting my work. There's a reason it took me this long to make the thread.

Manifolds and turbo just loosely mocked up, nothing is torqued down. I highly doubt that Downstar hardware on the exhaust manifold will work without backing out, I may or may not actually try to use it. Otherwise I'll use studs + wedge washers.

Re: Chance EG Build Thread - Restomod With Arashi Turbo, Tucked AC, Etc

Just working on things at random today, more test fitting. Have a few bolts I'll need to find replacements for.
Working on getting the turbo clocked the way it needs to be, and the oil/water feed/drain sorted out - Looks like it should be a pretty straightforward affair.
May get the intake side torqued down today. There's one exhaust stud that's SUPER stuck in the head that I can't get out which is preventing me from torquing down the hot side.

On that note though, I will also be replacing that Downstar exhaust hardware with some studs and wedge washers, I'd just be a lot more confident in that. I think the intake manifold will be ok on the bolts since that side of the engine sees a lot less heat and also holds less weight.

Re: Chance EG Build Thread - Restomod With Arashi Turbo, Tucked AC, Etc

Turbo clocked in a good position. I think I'm going to get a different drain flange for the turbo, one with a straight 10AN coming off so I can use a 45 deg fitting after it. Also got the distributor mocked up and half shaft on. Turbo studs are torqued with blue loctite into the exhaust manifold (literally the only thing that's actually torqued down right now).
Oil feed may be an issue, will likely need to either angle the turbo slightly which I'd like to avoid, or try to find a banjo fitting that could work with the feed line. If anyone knows of something like that let me know.
So much easier figuring all this stuff out on an engine stand versus when I had to work on components like this on my old S2K in the engine bay. That was miserable, especially at the time when I was a novice in over my head.

Dragonfire dizzy looks really good, hopefully it performs well and doesn't have any issues with signal.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/honda-t...a7cc6be294.jpg

Edit: I'm finding some banjo bolt oil feed kits for GT series turbos, that have an integrated 1mm restrictor. Just need to find one that's the right length. I'm going to go ahead and spend the $70 or whatever it ends up costing to change the feed line to that style - I think I could make what I have now work, but it would make serviceability bad because with this current feed, I'd only be able to get it on/off with the turbo off the manifold. Banjo style will just be better.

Dragon fire distributor DID NOT WORK on a friends setup back in September i think. Caused a bunch of issues that went away with a stock distributor

They have a good reputation among domestic cars, but speaking loosely I don't think a lot of those GM/Ford engines are as sensitive as far as CKF sensors and such, especially considering the RPM our engines reach compared to big V8s.

New OEM dizzys are $700+, if I do have problems with the Dragonfire I'll either shell out the cash for that or do a COP conversion. The Dragonfire dizzy, ACL oil pump, and Arashi turbo are all parts I'm evaluating on this engine and will be sharing the results here - Of the 3 I think the dizzy is most likely as you said to cause issues.

In for updates  definitely looks like a fun build

What you did with the rear interior came out amazing, how did you end up deciding to go that route?

Thanks man :)

I don't remember where I originally found this shop, but they build these rear seat delete kits for Civics, Integras, and Foxbody Mustangs: https://kdezines.com/rear-seat-delete
I've always liked how hatches look with the rear seats out of the car, but didn't want to just leave it bare. This also offers opportunity for sound deadening.

I dont like the acl pumps either. My drag buddies use them. They just look cheap. Oil seals leak on them. They dont log oil pressure but the bearings never look good. Theres a seller on amazon that sells oem pumps for 160.
Fun fact ive never bought a new oem pump, just open the pumps i get with my spare blocks and measure the tolerances and use them. I have opened some that were trashed. I just pulled a pump from the yard because it looked really good and paid 20 bucks for it.
No comment on the turbo except if it explodes itll take out a bunch of your parts.

I read a lot of very good things about Arashi turbo, and almost no bad when I was researching them last year - They're very popular as replacement or upgrade turbos for Subarus and Evos. Plus they look too cool to pass up.
I have a gauge to monitor oil pressure, if anything I'm anticipating to have too high pressure with this pump.

Time will answer all questions, these all (should) be good quality parts but don't have as much experience behind them to back them up. As long as (knock on wood) the engine doesn't grenade itself within the first couple months of the car running I can deal with any issues. If it pops during tuning or the first few pulls then yeah I'll be kind of bummed out lol.

Re: Chance EG Build Thread - Restomod With Arashi Turbo, Tucked AC, Etc

Spent several hours since last evening with several browser tabs open simultaneously while I researched and looked for different odds and ends.

Will be attempting to use a 2000 Civic Si B16 compressor for my AC setup (current one is off my original D16 and not compatible with the fittings I have). Got a pressure switch adapter from Coldhose that should let me splice the OEM high pressure sensor directly into my #6 line.
Ordered a 32" -3AN banjo bolt oil feed with an integrated .035" restrictor. Hopefully it's long enough. The banjo fitting should keep me from having to clock the turbo away from true vertical. Also got a different drain flange to try and get a better angle there.
Also ordered a 6AN Radium Orb low profile fitting for the water feed to the turbo, and Downstar titanium studs and Nordlock wedge washers to replace the bolts I currently have for the manifold.
Getting a spacer for my Vibrant oil cooler because otherwise the block and water pipe are right in the way of where the lines need to come out.

I'm spending the extra time now to get everything as perfect as possible. Removing variables, the less things to worry about the better. Having the engine on the stand makes it really easy to see how good or bad fitment is, making the most of the opportunity.

Labour of love. Makes my project on my '93 look like child's play. Very well done indeed.

Chance EG 02-15-2023 02:57 PM

Re: Chance EG Build Thread - Restomod With Arashi Turbo, Tucked AC, Etc

Small Update: Found a solution for my AC pressure switch - I have a #6 tee I can use with the high pressure hose, I'll just need to get it spliced in. OEM pressure switch threads right in, two wires to extend and that'll take care of it. Kind of want to buy AC tools myself, but still busy spending money on the few remaining parts I need.

Last variable to get a fully functional tucked AC will be an AC compressor that's compatible with my fittings. I have a compressor from a 2000 Civic Si that should be in soon, I think a B16 compressor that came with R134a from the factory should work. I had the same issue with my 93 Si Evap core with one fitting not working, the Evap slot was either too big/small for what I had available. Switching to a 95 EG Evap core that came with R134a from the factory solved that, so I'm hoping this compressor is the same fix.

So theoretically, even an AC compressor from a 94+ Civic SOHC may also work. Or even like a 97 B16 Del Sol.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/honda-t...d6029844ee.jpg

I'm going to do a separate post writing up the process once I have the AC system proven to work. At this point I've seen several people with a system like this mocked up, but most of them do it in a very hack fashion and I have yet to see a single video of the setup actually running, even from DC5Creations who makes the "kit" (he's had to make several revisions to it on the fly and it's become apparent that he has a poor understanding of his own product). Anyway, figuring it out.

Thank you - The fancy fasteners are mostly just for looks, but it's also definitely nice to have new hardware when putting all of this together rather than trying to organize and reuse grimy 30 year old factory bolts.

I got all the hardware from Downstar, when they send you their kits they come with a printout listing the contents of each bag (IE Bag #1 Oil pump, Bag #2 Oil Pan, Bag #3 Water Pump, etc). It just makes the whole process a bit easier, and definitely much more rewarding reassembling everything.

The cost, unless it's changed since I ordered, also isn't all that bad IMO - At least not compared to what I'd be spending anyway at Home Depot for new zinc bolts. To me it's a very worthwhile purchase if you're reassembling an engine.

Re: Chance EG Build Thread - Restomod With Arashi Turbo, Tucked AC, Etc

My AC system has been completely solved and figured out now (pending results of course).

The fittings I have fit the 2000 Si compressor perfectly, and the compressor bolts up of course no problem to the B16A and lines up perfectly with the pulley. I'll have the fittings fully seated later, but you can see here everything will fit great:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/honda-t...23fdc54876.jpg

So for me the winning combination seems to be:
94-95 Civic Evaporator
1997 Civic Dryer
2000 Civic Si Compressor
ClimaParts 10x18" Parallel Condenser W/ #6 and #8 fittings
ColdHose #6 Inline Hose Adapter W/ 3/8"-24 Switch Port
SPAL 5.2" Puller Fan

And then I'm using the AC lines and fittings provided by JackSpania. Note as I've mentioned that neither that kit, nor DC5's are perfect and both will require different degrees of modification and parts swapping depending on what car you're doing this on - In my case with a 93 Si that came with R12, a lot of changes as listed above are needed.

I would anticipate that any 94+ Evap core would work, obviously use a 94-95 if you're on an EG or a 96-00 if you're on an EK. Same with the Dryer, I'd expect anything 94-00 Civic to work, and even for the AC compressor likely the same deal 94+, and I'd actually wager even a D series compressor would work. I can only confirm 100% the parts I listed above though.

Again, I'm going to post a separate and full write up on this once I have the car running and the AC charged and proven to work. Neat stuff.

I will, I haven't actually installed them yet - just lined them up to see if they'd go in. I still haven't done final torque on anything on the engine, hoping to start getting some of that done this weekend and moving into next week as parts delivery allows, lots of little odds and ends.

Neat stuff.

I believe the DC5 kit comes with the condenser and drier so I would presume those parts would be compatible. I am sure there is likely still some part swapping elsewhere though.
