Catch can didn't come with any baffles - what should I use to stuff the can with?

I've read a few of the posts here, and was sort of POed to find out that the catch can which I ordered did not have any internal baffles. Its a Weapon R catch can, for those of you who are interested.

I've seen a couple of posts of people suggesting using stainless steel wool, or even Brillo pads. But I really don't want anything breaking off and getting sucked into my engine. Any ideas? Here are some photos of this thing....

Inside - yep, fairly empty inside of there....

Try that nylon or plastic spongy thingy that women use in showers. It's like a body wash thingy or something. Doesn't break off, so you should have no worries.

Filter the vaccum sorce, put a big clear fuel filter on the side going to the engine. You'll at least be able to tell if your concern is justified.

whats the purpose of a baffle? To catch airborn oil?

Baffles or baffle material add surface area to the catch can. This increases the surfaces that oil can stick to...this effect removes more oil from the outgoing crancase air.
A plain catch can adds some volume that removes oil from the air, baffling increases the effectiveness.
The only process that I have seen which is more effective than baffled cans is a rotational oil separator system.

And I say: DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL!!! steel particle can get away with the air flow and now you got steel particle swimming all over the damn place in your engine...
use the little gay thing that girl use in the shower... ya know those fluffy spongie thing... shower gel sponge or something like that they cost next to nothing and do the job pretty good IMO.

Kranked.

Re: (kranked91dx)

steel wool is a very bad idea.
Good idea = the linked ball chains used for operating light switches. No chance of particles getting into your oil system and doing some unintended machine work.

In my Greddy catch can I went and got some tight mesh aluminum gutter screen, fold it a few times, bend it into a W, and stuck it in the can. seemed to do the trick.

this is the first time i hear this option.. wut is it made out just cotton???

also wouldnt the wash sponge thing melt?? ...its made out of plastic right? ...how about the aluminum gutterguard... would that be the same as the steel wood?? ...and why would the air brake the steel wood??... has any1 of u actauly use the steel wood and had some particles going into ur intake manifold??

monicle 12-22-2003 09:52 AM

Re: (JCracer723)

the catch can doesnt see any real heat so no it wouldnt melt a plastic baffle, the gutter mesh doesnt come apart it has to be cut, and I have no experience with steel wool.
