So I am driving home and hear a noise from my car. All of a sudden I loose power, hit the gas, nothing happens. I look in the rear view and see red hot stuff coming from the rear of the car. I get the car to the side of the road and look under it and the cat is glowing bright red. I try to start the car, no go, it just cranks and thats it. I try a few more times and then pop the hood and wait for about 15-20 minutes. I then try to start it again and am finaly able to do so. The car seems to run okay now, I only drove it about 4 miles home. It seems to idle fine and rev up fine. Can anyone tell me what happend? The only thing that I noticed before hand was that the cat was rattling some at low RPM's. Oh yea, I now get a check engine light for the O² sensor after about 5 minutes of driving.

hmmmm...glowing red tends to be TOO much fuel and its trying to burn it all off before it goes into the rest of the exhaust.i have no clue what could cause that and then for it to all be fine...
you running an fmu????
my cat glowed red but only when one of my spark plug wires fell off and i was running on 3 cylinders...took me 2 hours to figure out it was only the wire that came off

The brick inside the cat has probably fallen apart. If the cat rattles when you tap the bottom, then your cat is dead. btw, the same thing happened to my Carsound cat as well. Fortunately, the cat should be under warranty and you should be able to get it replaced for free.

Not using an FMU, Zdyne Gold stand alone. I am going to take it off in the morning and check it out I guess.

i heard of carsounds falling apart internally from a guy at a local shop who wouldnt sell me a carsound.

Will Carsound pay to have two new flanges welded on if it was a faulty cat?

No, Carsound would only warranty the cat. I took the warranty credit and got myself a Magnaflow resonated test pipe instead.
