car detonates aabove 5500rpm under boost
k this is my deal. i am running a type r with a greddy turbo setup that has a power fc and basically the whole setup. when i go into boost at around 5500RPM if i punch it will start to lunge forward then not go and it backfires and detonates pretty perfusely. my fuel pressure is currently at 42psi at idle. it says my timing is at 44 degrees advance when im driving an 16degrees advance when im idle. i was thinking my msd ignition could some way be causeing my timing to advance way to far in turn making my car detonate and all that bad stuff when i go into boost. if someone can give me some insight i would greatly appreciate it. oh also my power fc hasnt been tuned yet that will happen on nov.20 so all the knowledge i could get before i go to get it dyno tuned would greatly help my chances of egtting th eproblem fixed. thanks for all ur time whoever reads this

First off don't boost anymore until you fix the problem, and get it tuned, secondly retard your timing about 3-4 degrees in the mean time.
I'm not sure but i think your timing is advancing so far because of the ecu (normal for type r) and it's set-up for n/a power. How much boost are you runing?I know on my b16a i have to run 13 degree's of timing, instead of 16 degrees to help fight detonation.

You didn't mention a few very important things... Stock Type-R block with 10.2:1 Compression?? The gas you're running, and the psi you're running on the turbo... Since it's a greddy, I'm guessing 8psi? I'm also guessing you're using 91 octane?? Yes the advance in your timing is a problem... But since you're detonating, this isn't causing your problem... It will be a problem once you get your detonation to stop though... With your timing advanced you're not giving the extra air that's being forced in by the turbo enough time to burn... So you may want to retard the timing... As for detonation... On pump gas with 10.2:1 compression, you can't boost much... At full throttle when you're boosting, on the compression stroke, as it compresses the mixture, the air simply gets too hot for pump gas and the heat causes it to combust (detonate) before the spark, hence detonation... Simply put, you may want to retard your timing, and only boost that much when you're running Higher octane gas... 91 octane just isn't going to cut it with 10.2:1 compression and a decent amount of boost... Right now the mixture is combusting before TDC which is actually pushing against the force of the piston as it rises during the compression stroke... That's why it probably feels like you're slowing down or at least not speeding up any when you start detonating... Turn down the boost to a point where it stops detonating, or run higher octane gas, mix in some racing fuel, 104, 108 etc... The higher the octane, the more compression it can handle... You may also want to think about increasing the fuel pressure so that more fuel gets injected into the mixture... This will also help reduce your leanness... A good A/F Ration for turbo setups is around 12:1 whereas N/A applications are around 14.7:1... Hope this helps you out bro... Good luck...

actually my compression is at 9.2 i lowered it when i rebuilt my bottom end. i think my car just needs to eb tuned cause the power fc still thinks my car is n/a and has 10.6 comp but thnaks for the help guys im getting it dyno tuned tomarrow ill get back to u when its does and post some dyno sheets. oh by the way i changed my name

stock USDM ITR's are 10.6:1 compression and JDM ITR's are 11:1 compression.

What spark plugs are in your car????? my car had the same problem because i used the stock plugs. I changed the plugs and no more problem. It was blowing out the spark when it spooled. Get plugs for turbo and put them in. Thats what worked in my car.

NGK
BKR7E is already pregapped and 2 stages colder..its what I use.

Hmmm Well it starts to do this when you hit vtec right?

get it tune by a respectable shop with a dyno. Idon't think you can just bolt on a turbo and turn boost up and go racing .tuning is they key for a fast carand one that don't blow up. 44 advance is way to much it will go boom if you keep it up.

Do you ahve a timing retard module? Like a MSD BTM?
If you do, then you have too much retard under boost. Try 0.75 deg/ per pnd of boost or 0.50 per pound. I had similiar symptoms.

problemwas i had a double check valve aka "missing link" on my MAP sensor so with my stock comp it wouldnt read boost but when i installe dmy pfc it was trying to read boost and wasnt able to inturn ******* up everthing... thansk for all ur help guys. oh i put out 345hp to the wheels today on the dyno at 17psi of boost

XS said that with a healthy motor it can puch about 18-19 on race fuel and around 16-17 on pump gas. i was amazed also

also it depend son which compressor wheel greddy uses. they said that greddy uses afew diff comp size wheelson tehw 18g turbo and i guess i had the biggest on ethey put onto the 18g turbo.

I knew it was 10.6:1, what was I thinking... Oh wait a sec... I read this the other day, it changed my mind...
http://www.hondaswap.com/reference/i...e=engine&id=24
looks like they have it wrong... Says 10.2:1... I guess you can't beleive everything you read, even at a reputable site... Sorry for the incorrect numbers...
