Default Can you blow the oil seals on a ball bearing turbo?

I am getting conflicting answers from Garretts Authorized distributors. So I wanted to ask here so that Maybe I could get a definitive answer as to whether or not you can rebuild/blow the oil seals in a ball bearing turbo....or do you have to replace the whole CHRA.

My turbine/compressor housing had some oil inside of it but very minimal shaft play. SO... does this mean I need a new CHRA or can I just get the oil seals replaced? Thanks for any help

Make sure you are using a restrictor in the oil feed. I used the ATP pinhole restrictor and it worked fine with my GT28RS and with my GT3071R. I tried it with jus a -3AN oil feed line at first and it blew oil past the seals until I put the restrictor in the oil feed line. Garrett told me the seals can't be replaced and you have to get a new CHRA if they are blown.

Is the restrictor only used on BB turbos, or is that supposed to be used on reg turbos, like a Greddy 15G?

Just on BB turbos, regular journal-bearing turbos need plenty of oil to float the bearings.

THAT IS FALSE!

-4an feed guys always blow out seals and need a restrictor.

some -3an feed guys get lucky and dont blow out the seals, but 80% of the time -3an feed guys need a restrictor too.

GARRET turbos (JOURNAL type) like to have around 30psi of pressure. i use a 1/16th restrictor on my t3 turbo, with a 4an feed line (old stealthmode) and before the restrcitori had oil coming out my hot side. it still leaks.

ball bearing turbos need a specific amount of oil also. im not to sure on the size of the restrictor hole that is used for them. some also have it built into the chra while others dont.

HOLSET turbos are the ones more resistant to high oil pressures.

Compared to ball bearing turbos, *******. He asked if the ATP pinhole (1/29") restrictor that I suggested for a BB turbo was supposed to be used on a TD04H-15G, which it shouldn't, unless you're a ******* moron that likes to ruin perfectly good turbos.

My garret 35R came with a restrictor, and its no bigger than a pin hole.
