Can machine shop tighten piston/wall clearance on stock bore?
Is there a way for a machine shop to tighten the piston/wall clearance on stock bore forged pistons? I really do not want to go with oversized pistons but am afraid of having too much clearance. If it's too tight material can always be taken away but what happens if it's too loose? I heard that they can expand the piston skirt somehow...is this true?

theres a real 1/2 *** way called knurling the piston skirts.
but a better way would be to get the skirts coated with moly

if you get stock bore forged pistons, the only thing you should have to do is hone the cylinders unless the cylinder wall are so messed up that honing won't work. The pistons are made to fit the stock cylinder walls.

To properly restore the piston to wall clearance, You will need to overbore and get new pistons or have liners put in and honed out to the proper piston to wall clearnace using your existing pistons...I wish there was another acceptable way, but there is unfortunately not...

Just go about .010 oversize....and have the block machined after you get the pistons and then machine the bores to the clearance you want.

What are typical clearances w/ stock bore pistons? I'm just afraid that they'll be too loose and then ill be stuck with them.

stock bore and stock pistons is usually a couple thousandths piston to wall clearance. Aftermarket forged pistons are usually around 5 thousandths piston to wall clearrance...You can get a rough estimate by putting you piston in the bore(without the rings on) and slide feeler guages down in between...it will give you a ball park....the proper way is to Mic the bore diameter and the piston...but the feeler guage will give you a good estimate...
Hope that helps,
