A/C compressor burned out...started smoking....had to tow the car
i have a 2000 prelude h22a with a drag gen4 turbo kit. the 1st pipe from the turbine burned a hole in my A/C pipe and all the freon is already gone. but here's what happened:
i was driving normal and all of a sudden it started smoking on the freeway. got off and the car completely died. had to start and restart to get to a safe spot.
i opened up the hood and there was smoke coming from the belt area. after towing it home, i started it up in my driveway while a friend looked at the area. it started for 30 seconds and started hearing clicking sounds. i had to keep my foot on the gas to keep the engine running and from dying out too.
my friend found out that the clicking sound is from the A/C and it looks like it's shot.
i have never turned on the A/C since the freon leaked, does anyone know why the compressor would burn out?

well if its still clicking, its trying to make some sort of compression. my compressor made the same noise and it turned out to be my expansion valve was bad. i would check the expansion valve first, its on the evaporator under your dash. mine was like $300 to replace the expansion valve, reciever dryer, evacuate and recharge the system.

does it sound like metal clunking noise? If you don't turn on your AC, then your compressor should be fine. It sounds like your A/C compressor clutch went bad. Usually the bearing on the clutch pulley went bad which makes pull stuck. That's why you have to give it some gas to keep your engine idle. Look like you have to replace the whole clutch assembly, cuz Honda dont' sell them separately.

cut your A/C belt and try to see if you can turn the clutch pulley freely or not.

it isn't really a clunking noise, more like a bearing that seized and metal is rubbing against metal. also it looks like there are metal shavings on the belt connected to the steering pump.

Look like your A/C clutch bearing is gone.
