Buying "Built" Motor : How to tell?!?
Looking at buying a motor from a friend of a friend sorta deal.
He says it is/has:
B18B1 LS Motor
-Crane Stage 2 Turbo Cams
-JE 8.75:1 comp. Pistons
-Eagle I-Beam Rods
-Stock Crank
-Cometic Metal Head Gasket
-AEM Tru-Time Cam Gears
-Exedy 9lb. Flywheel
-Slow Motion Block Guard
-Valve Springs
(Never turbo'd)
Are there ways for me to tell if this is true other then going to a shop and having them tear it down? I don't have a problem taking off the valve cover/oil pan or other quick things to look/check. The only reason I am suspicious is because it is his friends car, the friend was in an accident (hit a pole), the guy I'm buying it from said he had receipts, but then there was a flood and the receipts were lost (believable all over the news). I wanted to give him some money and have the shop that I work with (2 hours away from him) check it out, he didn't want to have any part of that. But he would be ok going with me to a closer shop that I have worked with before.
or ?
Any help would be appreciated.

pull the pan, easy to see the rods, if it has the rods more than likely it hast he pistons but not for sure. You can take the VC off and try to see the cams springs and retainers.

Re: (quicksilver1689)
Thats what I was figuring. The other thing was when I mentioned my concerns he sounded kinda concerned like he didn't know either. He said he went outside and pulled the vc and saw the aem cam gears (I'm just like ) Then tried to tell me it had everything his buddy said it did. I thought that as well, if someone went to the trouble of doing rods then they most likely did pistons. Will it be easy to tell if they are not stock rods?

Re: (90sedan)
Not sure if I'm going to be able to do that in the time frame that hes looking at. Anyone have pics of stock rods in a block side by side with one with built rods?

pull the vc it takes seconds. crower cams have there names cast on them (very visible). pull a spark plug and use a boreascope to look inside the cylinders.
off the shelf forged pistons have sharper angles at the valve releifs. if its got pistons and cams and springs its probably got rods too. thats the best bet in under
30 minutes unless the mors out already then it wont take any time hardly to pull
and replace the oilpan.

if its a B18B1 why not just pop the head off ? it would only take all of 20min if the engine is in or out of the car. or look suggested just a mechanics scope and look down the spark plug hole

Given the price of cams (and how easy it is to take them out), I'd take them out & measure the lobes. The rod question has been answered, but for pistson - pull the plugs and shine a VERY bright light into it. Forged pistons are 100% machined, and it should be easy to tell. It will have carbon covering most of the piston if it's over 5k miles old, but usually the intake side stays fairly clean. Use some seafoam to removfe that junk to be sure.
Otherwise have a legal contract writen up stating what it should come with, and a clause what to do if it doesn't have a part. Just make sure there are pictures to document what's there, so that they can't say you replaced parts. Basicly you want to cover your butt - I only trust people as far as I can throw them when money is involved.
