Built Motors

How long do built motors usually last (pistons, rods, sleeves) if well taken care of, no detonation.

that's a good question. I think it all depends on how your break it in, how anal you are on maintenence, and how you drive on it, as well as materials used. If it was properly assembled, with close tolerances used, yada yada yada, I don't think 30k miles is out of the question.

Re: Built Motors (VaporTrail)

Are you serious only 30k miles? What do you think stock motor would be better for daily driving then with maybe half the boost of what a built motor can take? With everything tuned of course.

Re: Built Motors (9psiLsT)

man if you build a motor and are getting 30k out of it, you got problems. these are higher performance better than stock shit we use. you must understand the quality of machine work is the most important component of the process. you must hone, and deck and clearence to exacting spec's. most people dont take the time to do this, machine shops included. you need to find a shop that has a good reputation among reputable customers...make any sense? if your buddies all say this place is the bomb..and you walk into somewhere like pann auto to see someone drilling dowel pin holes in a head, using a drill press and holding the head free hand, you are not getting the quality you need, and are probably paying for.

a built motor will last as long if not longer than a stocker. if you start boosting more, etc you will definately lessen the life span. think propper tuning {stand alone} think responsible driving...

Re: Built Motors (kawgomoo)

I would think it could last longer longer(80k+), but yea its up to you on how you maintain to preserve longevity.

Re: Built Motors (FAST94GSR)

i dont know about 80k...

when u build a motor... u build a race motor... and if it will be used what u built it for... it wont last 80k miles... with a race motor u are pushing limits... stock motors people just stay safe... hell... if u build a motor a run it the same way as u did when it woasnt built... its will last a LONG time

Re: Built Motors (4dr-gsr)

i don't know anyone who builds a motor and doesn't beat on it to a certain extent.
anyone spending close to $5000+ for a fully built motor and not taking it to the limits is just wasting their time and cash.

so in theory, a built motor will last no where near as close a stock motor.

Re: Built Motors (bgod)

exactly... built motors do not last compared to factory spec motors... it all depends on how it was built/tuned/mainteained/etc... the last block on my car had a gsr block/ block guard/ pistons/rings... and it took a shit... once u build a motor... u CAN push it more... and therefore u will... and therefore it will break... it comes with the territory... a built nmotor will net u more power as well as breaking more... it is built to hold power... not to last (this doesnt mean a motor should last one run though)

Re: Built Motors (ek9t)

Interesting on everybody's views here. I believe JG Engine Dynamics made turbo engines that lasted a long time. If its built right and not too abused I would assume it can last a while..

Re: Built Motors (FAST94GSR)

i never said it wont hold up... im just saying it will never last as long as a motor left in its stock form

Re: Built Motors (ek9t)

this is especially true when you get into forged pistons. Since they are forged, they are more durable, but they have to run looser piston to wall clearances, which shortens ring life. Typically, rings which are designed for high power apps also won't last as long.

I have always looked at it this way: Anytime you substantially increase the power of a motor, it also takes away it's lifespan. It's just a fact of life.
