Built H22 GT30R not boosting before 6k rpm
Hi guys,
I have an odd problem, i have jus finished my turbosetup heres the list:
- 8.5:1 Wiseco coated pistons
- Eagles
- ACL bearings
- 650cc RC's
- SS Topmount
- GT30R BB .63 60 trim
- 3" full DP-exhaust with turbo muffler
- Tial 38mm w 10 psi spring
- Greddy type RS bov
- chopped up Terragator intercooler
- 2.5" chargepipes mandrell bent
- F20 tranny with OBX lLSD
- stock CG9 accord
Im not seeing boost til 6k rpm, tough i can hear the turbo spooling like mad after 3k rpm. I checked if it was the wastegate (swapped it for a SSAC one from a friend of mine), but it made no differance. I also tried different spring tensions on the BOV, wich obviously didnt matter.... Im thinking it might be the intercooler bcs it has 60% of the surfacearea of the 2.5" chargepipes. Will it cause that much of an pressuredrop??
Any help, opinions would be welcome... i was expexting to have somewhat "instant" boost with the .63 GT30R
PS: i'm from the Netherlands so dont go hating on my spelling

I don't think the intercooler will cause that much of a pressure drop. If the turbo is spooling and you aren't seeing boost, then you've got a leak. The leak must not be bad because you are still seeing boost eventually, but it's likely that the turbo is compressing the air much more than the pressure that you are seeing.

your intercooler design is not a great ideal and it honestly looks to big ~ my .02
but anyways maybe you do have a leak or you have insane boost drop off from your intercooler

I checked if there were any leaks, the only non chackable thing is the BOV.
I know the intercoolerdesign isnt optimal, but bcs of my AC im limited to a passenger side inlet and outlet. Im planning to replace it with a vertical flowing type (endtanks on top and bottom), this in due time... i'm kinda broke right now
EDIT its made of the intercooler on the far right:

see, what i dont get is that i do get boost up high, but you would suppose that at high rpm's the intercooler would be a big restriction (@ high a flowrate), so at low flowrates (low rpm) i would easier see some boost.

it coudl the the intercooler design, look your shoving air into one side, slamming it into a 90* turn, then slamming it into anotehr wall and making it turn another 90* back to the same directing it came from. it might be taking that much backpressure to cause it to push enough to get something going. that really is a very poor endtank design.

Re: (dutchaccord)
how did you check for a boost leak?
best thing to do is make a boost leak detector. Search it on the internet, its really easy to make, basically its a way to use compressed air to pressurize the system, then you can listen for where the air is leaking from and it will be a rather loud hissing sound.
I agree, if your getting boost but not the right amount, most likely a leak.
Usually even on bad intercooelers, there is no more than 3 psi pressure drop.
ps...i like where you put your catchcan!!

I'm interested to know when you get boost and a dyno. I think I'll be using this turbo for my build, but in the .82 A/R

I'm using a Gt30 with .82 a/r on a H22 - 92 hatch. It starts boosting almost immediately when I blip the gas 1.5 psi or so and 9 psi by mid 4K.

Re: (purpleh22)
just a thought but couldn't you bypass the intercooler? at least for testing purposes.. if the problem remains at least you can rule out a leak in the IC itself or turbulance from the endcaps.

Re: (allmotorSOHC16)
It's so the intercooler, for sure. Cut that thing in half and run the charge piping over top and then 180 into the driverside if the intercooler. Or make 2 intercoolers out of that one by again seperating it down the center and use a 180 bend to connect the 2 on the driverside. I think that would be pretty dope look'in. This would also keep the same rueting, voila!!

Do a boost leak test. We have this black rubber thing from Home Depot that fits over the compressor inlet with a hole in the middle. We put the air in through there to fill everything and listen to leaks. Even with an inefficient intercooler you shouldnt be getting boost that late

You've probably got a chargepipe loose. Do the boost leak test like everyone is saying and you'll find the problem.
