jason14's bore and piston size & sleeve questions for a new turbo project
i know this may sound stupid, but i'm just learning on internal components so give me time. so heres the question. if i get my b16a3 block bored .20 over and get darton sleeves, then i would have to get 85mm pistons, correct? plus, that would make more power of course beause of bigger displacement. not to sure, so i thought i'd ask b4 i start buyin turbo internals

Re: bore and piston size question? (delsol8017)
ummmm wow......First you need to get Darton Sleeves THEN bore it to appropriate size. Seemed like you said you wanted to bore your block .20 over then get Darton Sleeves which is *** backwards. If you get Darton Sleeves you can bore the block to whatever the heck you want... 81-84mm. I wouldn't go any bigger than 85 for boosted applications. I personally run 83 with room for error.

Re: bore and piston size question? (delsol8017)
first of all 20 over is 20 thousanths, this is .020" which is .5mm which would take your bore to a 81.5. If you are getting your block sleeved you might as well go with atleast 83mm in my opinion. I would talk with your engine builder about all of this ahead of time and make sure they are someone that you trust.

You engine builder should be able to tell you what you need for reliability and what makes the most sense for your expectations....not what you want...... If your builder can't tell you that, go somewhere else...

Ha nope not the owner of slomo, they are in the same area as me though... his name is corey parish. 83mm is .080 over stock. dont worry about how much over just tell whoever is sleeving your block that you want it 83mm buy 83mm pistons and head gasket.

Re: bore and piston size question? (delsol8017)
b16, b18 blocks are originally 81mm.
When you sleeve a block with a Darton MID sleeve, you can choose the bore size from either 81mm or 84mm.
the 81mm kit is able to bore to 81-85mm.
the 84mm kit is able to bore from 84-85mm
When choosing a bore size, keep in mind the choices you have for that certain bore and the other accompanying parts required, such as the head gasket. when going with an 83mm bore, keep in mind you need an aftermarket Cometic 83mm head gasket or a custom bored OEM gasket to 83mm.
Same goes with an 82+mm bores in a b16 block.
Also if you're looking at getting a Darton sleeve, are you getting the MID kit or are they the drop in straight sleeves. The darton replacement sleeves have a limitation on bore size so keep that in mind when picking out which sleeves you are looking for. The Darton MID are the ones that can be bored out to larger bore sizes.

Re: bore and piston size question? (delsol8017)
i did make it out to the import face off, but my car isnt running right now. Dont get drop in straight sleeves. you will want a full sleeve kit the mid sleeves, or golden eagle.... Fowler engines does all of slowmotions work and they do good work.....

They will if you press them in! You just wont have any clearance. If you buy 81mm CP pistons the clearance is built in so they will fit.

So isnt that why people by 82mm pistons for 81mm bore?

re: jason14's bore and piston size & sleeve questions for a new turbo project

re: jason14's bore and piston size & sleeve questions for a new turbo project
I'm no mathematician but, 84 > 83.. I'm not sure how you would think to use an 84mm piston on an 83mm bore.. Unless you're asking something ENTIRELY different? If that be the case, it's massively helpful that you elaborate..

re: jason14's bore and piston size & sleeve questions for a new turbo project
so if I was to bore out to 83mm with darton sleeves I would use 83mm pistons??surely that would be to tight on the bore with no clearance ?

re: jason14's bore and piston size & sleeve questions for a new turbo project
You're new to this building thing, huh? Watch out, it's addictive!! Let's say you have a bore of 83mm.. You will order 83mm pistons, HOWEVER, you need the machine shop to hone out piston to wall clearance. In MOST instances, this will be about .0035 for forged pistons. So in essence, your final bore will be 83.089mm, or approximately 83.1mm
