Default Boosting my friends DOHC ZC. advice/opinions wanted!

My friend has a 91 DX hatchback converted to SI with a JDM DOHC ZC engine and tranny. Since he is on a budget, he only wants to put a few pounds boost on it until he can have it properly tuned and get his setup the way he wants it.

My main concern is I've never worked with one of these engine and im not sure what it can handle.
Anybody know how much horse a stock DOHC ZC can handle? What size turbo would be ideal with the stock motor?

Another concern of ours is running boost while OBD0.
How do boosted hondas run on OBD0 compared to OBD1?
Would it be worth the effort just to convert it to OBD1 for tunings sake?

Id like to see a few setups and get some advice from people that have boosted a DOHC ZC so if your out there SPEAK UP!

Since everyone likes pics round here ill post one of the car as it sits when I get on a computer. Thanx in advance for your help!

convert to obd1 if the budget allows it.

otherwise you can run turboedit. run version 3.1.7 or newer. any older and the program is VERY hard to use. the new versions are really good and run well.

the DOHC ZC can handle about the same as most D16 blocks. anywhere between 200-250whp with a good tune should be no problem. i wouldnt recommend making over 200ftlb of tq on the motor the rods arent exactly beefy.

ideal size turbo? depends where you want boost. 14b would make some good boost nice and low, 16g would be a bit higher RPM wise, maybe 4000rpm to see 10psi.

t3/t4 50 trim .63 AR hotside would make 10psi around 5000ish rpm.

depends on the exhaust manifold setup and exhaust as well....

It has a 2.25 exhaust.

Which would you recommend with the ZC tranny, 14b or 16g? I haven't worked with boosted cars much, seems the boost in the low rpms would be good with the shorter gears no?

Also what would you recommend for injector size if we don't go over 10psi?

get dsm 450s they can support more than a stock block can make.

2.25 is small. i recommend 3 inch. your friend will have to decide what he wants, the 2.25 will work but spool will be slower.

14b can easily make more power than a stock block can take. so i would go that route. it would make a fun torquy street car.

usually with shorter gears you want more RPM. a ZC tranny really isnt all that short, its just tighter ratio wise.

My friend bought Slidesquad Dave's EF back in the day. ZC motor with the Greddy TD04H turbo kit at 8psi. The car was very quick on the streets. We upgraded to the dsm injectors & had it tuned. It put down 219hp/174lb torque to the wheels. The only thing I'd recommend would be upgrading your clutch as that will definitely be one of the first things to go.

Yea we have to replace his clutch anyways, he put in one of those F1 racing clutchs and it smoked up already.

What did your friend hatch run for injectors before the dsms?

He had stock injectors on it at a max of 8psi. After a tune, I think he went up to 15lbs but remember, this is a tiny turbo that spools fast!

I have run 3 different setups with dohc zc d16a9, common in here europe. First setup was wiseco/eagle/sc50 .48. and revhard cast mani. 3" exhaust to backseat then 2.5". Great turbo for dohc zc, full boost @4000rpm, running 27psi. i was revving to 8.5k with crespo springs and few rockers fly off and valve dropped in engine trashing head and turbo. I suggest u rev to 8krpm only this engine, stock head is fine. 13.1/118mph 1/4 with 2.350 60ft street tires.

Second i was runnin vitara/(2mm shaved head)/eagle/t28 from s14 jdm, and my own built "ramhorn" mani. I think its good turbo for stock block, but since i was runnin build engine i wanted more power. This was 13.5/108mph with 2.240 60ft and street tires again. This turbo was not good for 8krpms, it was choking before, but pretty nice midle torque. i was boosting 15-20psi, stock wastegate was so loose that exhaust pressure opened it and i didnt matter if i had hose on wastegate. I added one external spring to that to hold up.

Third one i was running same mani but t3 flange and 60mm wastegate and holset hy35 54/58. Boostin 27psi and started to maxxing out my 680cc injectors i runned 12.9/121mph with bad gear box and 2.250 60ft, spinning third gear with slippery track.

Engine runs pretty good with vitara75.5mm+eagle+2mm shaved head. I cracked one sleeve with t28, dont know why. I think FJ rods + vitaras and maybe some head shaving it would run very nice. Piston to wall clearance was 0.08mm (same as wisecos, no piston slap)

I got d16z6 cheap so im building that to next summer and trying to max out hy35. I was tuning with BRE and TE. Stock ignition + denso iq29 plugs. Walbro pump and aem rail+fpr.
With z6 im going obd1 and ectune or neptune.

You can see some videos of my boosted dohc zc here:
