Default Blown Cometic Head Gasket *pics*

Over a month ago I noticed some gunk on the underside of my radiator cap and didnt really think anything of it other than there could have been some leftover debris from the build. After a while it gradually got worse and i started to notice the water in my radiator was turning a brownish color and the cooling system was becoming overly pressurized and every once in a while overflowing out of the reservior. After driving around for a while like this and eliminating anything else as a possible culprit i decied to pull the head and this is was i found (pics below) any ideas on what woulda caused this? this was on a benson sleeved 84mm b18c1 with a 00 b16a2 head (deck is good, i checked it).

ADDED: Also this is the 3rd cometic i had blow on 3 separate motors and Ive never had an OEM blow. I replaced it with an over bored OEM from GE and its owrking perfect as of now

Well cosmetic is not the best head gasket, I've never liked them because I've seen alot of them not hold up. I would definately get a honda head gasket from GE for your 84mm bore........the other kids I've seen having problems with cosmetic HG, the simply replaced it with a honda HG and the problem was solved. I've personally seen this 3 times, nothing out performs a honda HG!!!!!

A copper coating would definately help, but I believe GE does this to all of the honda head gaskets. I have one and and I'll take a look at it for you.

Your pics arn't working, My bro had the same problem, I think it was because his block was step-decked and the cometic doesnt work properly with a step-deck, anyway he swapped to an OEM honda as well.

Why is it that people think Cometic's suck just because it blows on them?

maybe.. thats the job of a head gasket is to keep motor sealed with in it self.. and it has a bad rep on blowing.. its not doing its job so therefore they suck

Because Honda head gaskets rarely blow!!! The best money can buy for a honda, especially with a copper coating!!!!!!!

FOR EVERYONE's sake........ USE OEM HOnda headgaskets only!!! to GE for having plentiful in stock.......

81mm get it at your local acura/honda dealership

anything bigger call GE up right away........

I'm not going to say this brand sucks and that one does too... We've had our shares of bad gaskets from aftermarket companies and to this day...we only trust OEM HONDA gaskets "PERIOD"......

i always use OEM honda gaskets
i have never had any blow on me or anyone i know
and the only ones i have seen go, is because they were either installed wrong, the water pump went bad and or someone overheated the car

I love OEM headgaskets... but unfortunately they do not make thicker ones. So whenever I do need a thicker head gasket I run the Cometic's. Other than that, I will always stick with OEM.

Really? I never would have thought that was the job of the head gasket. Thanks for the heads up ......ever hear of installation error or not using a product as it is entended for? That's what I'm getting at. I can say that because I've had two cometics over the span of 46,000+ miles (still going) and never had a single problem.

Things happen but knowing 99B16Si personally I know he installed it correctly. Car trapped 128 multiple times Saturday with the OEM/GEM gasket

It is surprising to me to see so many people having trouble with Cometic. We have run as much as 40lbs with them, pulled the head and then reused the same gasket at 40lbs again with no problems. The Cometics I have seen blown, the problem has always been because of other issues.

Chuck started out with cometic gaskets and after problem after problem, went to an oem honda and has never looked back. I run oem honda on every motor i build. Why change something that works so well?

I have a cometic head gasket and have had no problems YET. A couple people that I know have cometic also and are holding up just fine. I guess time will tell.
