Blowing coils like its going out of style (AEM EMS related)
so this is my third coil if i can count right, and i've drivin the car a total of about 1000 miles, and thats pushing it. It seems to happen after i have been cruising on the highway... once i get off the highway they seem to leave me stranded on the side of the road. I even had and aftermarket ignition setup, and the coil was in its own heatsink, cause i thought maybe it was getting too hot.
Well i am out of ideas and coils are expensive, so WTF is up. anyone else with these problems.
Also thinking that my ems has something to do with it

Re: Blowing coils like its going out of style (ICeDoUt)
what are you using for coil dwell? what coils are they?
coils dying are usually caused by too long of a dwell time, overcharging/heating them...

you should zero in your timing on the ems.
get a buddy w/ a timing light and put your distributor on the middle of the slot then set the timing as per the manual's directions. i blew 2 coils playing around with the set-up without monitoring with a timing light

Ask JDogg about coil dwell and blowing up coils with an EMS. He should have some good information for you on why they die.

I know coil dwell will blow coils. I had the problem back when I switched from version.73 to .94.

vince call aem tommorow and tell them what is going on. See if they have any ideas. Are you sure your ICM is not getting really hot and crapping out?

Re: Blowing coils like its going out of style (underpressure02)
did you buy your ems used???
there is a small chance that the ign is firing on the wrong edge due to a jumper being in the wrong spot. if its firing on the wrong edge it will be charging while it shouldnt be, etc.. im very suprised you havent cooked the ignitor in the process, normally they die before the coil does.
or you could get a msd 6a box.. cdi's dont care about dwell

Re: Blowing coils like its going out of style (JDogg)
yea i got the aem box used.
So your saying a 6a msd box could be the cure for me?
I'd rather stay as close to stock as possible for my ignition to save myself more headaches in the future.

yeah, open it up and check jpc1.. i dont remember which position it should be in right off hand, but switch it to the other position and see if that fixes the problem. make sure to resync the timing after you do htat.
