blew up with zex
Ok, i need some insight here.
b18b
Mugen pr4 ecu
jdm itr header
arp rod bolts
intake
exhaust
pr3 pistons (10.8-1)
So i used the 75 shot. the car went mad fast in 2nd from 4000 rpm to 7500 then shifted into 3rd and went to about 6500 before the motor sputtered twice. Melted #4 piston. I was using 91 octaine fuel with stock heat series spark plugs. Tell me what i need to do to not melt down this next weekend at the track. In a 90 crx si btw.

Re: blew up with zex (EFing8)
First of all: You're running a Mugen program and that probably advances your ignition timing significantly... advanced timing + NOS = detonation!
Decide if you want to keep the Mugen ecu...if you do---NO JUICE!
If you take it out----retard your ignition about 2-4 degrees
new spark plugs (2 heat ranges lower and bigger gap)
make sure you're getting enough fuel
weak fuel system + NOS = too lean (BOOM!)
That's only the basics... there's alot of **** online that will recommend how to tune for nos.... in fact zex's website has it...
Good luck

Basically do exactly what the step by step instructions say in the manual You can download a copy of the ZEX manual on their website in PDF form if you don't have the original paper copy. Hope you have better luck this weekend

Re: (98CTRCoupe)
yeah like they said get rid of the ecu , or dont even bother with the zex
get a stock ecu
at least zex plugs
if your gonna run the 75 shot either use 93-94 octane with some cheap oct booster or retard timing 1-2 degrees with the 93-94

Stock ECU
retard timing 1-2 degrees
1-2 heat range colder plugs
75shot (wet)
<-- ran like a scalded dog for a year, no problems (then i went turbo)...

Re: blew up with zex (silverEH2)
you can thank your chipped ecu for your blown engine. also i guarantee it didnt help you revving the b18b to 7500+ with that program

Re: blew up with zex (EFing8)
If you actually go through the zex manual it tells you to sample the different fuel jets to accomodate your engine. your motor might require a larger fuel jet than suggested to run the 75 shot. I would also say to retard the timing at least 2 degrees, if not the suggested 4 degrees by ZEX.

Re: blew up with zex (EFing8)
May I also point out that as far as I know there is not a Mugen program available for the b18b. I have seen them for everything from the d15 to a b20 and they only marketed ones for the b18c and b16, again as far as I know. In addition, Mugen only sells whole ECUs, not just chips. What this means is that some pseudo-hacker just advanced the **** out of the timing on a stock chip and maybe dumped in a little more fuel and took out your rev-limiter. Really crappy.
If you don't have a stock ecu, just rotate your distributor to retard the timing 10º or so (since the "Mugen" program advanced the **** out of it).

Re: blew up with zex (trbcivic)
the mugen ecu definately did it to ya... it is setup for n/a power. which one of the first things that is done is more timing.
you could have bumped back the timing a bunch and the ecu put it right back in... then boom... muchless revving the nonvtec that high.
you should have been 1-2 heat range cooler plugs too... copper core not platinum junk.

I know mugen doesn't make a program for my car. but thats what they callec it when i bought it. I'm not gonna call it "my *** **** ebay ecu"
Anyway thanx for the input i'll try the stock program with colder plugs. It did pull like ****** mad though.

I bet... prolly ate through the rpms like all hell broke loose. I have to give that to honda's... they usually plug away hard till their last breath.

Re: blew up with zex (Poop111444)
yeah, i actually make ecu chips now, so i could probly make that switch.
The rpms rose faster than i could even concentrate on i'm hoping for a high 12 next weekend.

higher comprestion+ chip + stock plugs= what just happened
like said above loose the ecu and colder plugs and pull some timming
and the zex is a easy install kit but nothing like a nice wet or DP kit

As the saying goes:
"It never felt faster than the moment before It melted a hole through my piston!"
...Be forewarned if it's too fast... You have a few seconds before boom!
