Blew my final drive: Opinions on aftermarket final drives for a turbo HPDE car
I blew out my final drive while getting onto the highway in second gear yesterday and now I am looking at different options for my JDM B16 cable J1 transmission. You can find the full story and carnage pics here: https://honda-tech.com/forums/transmission-drivetrain-127/broken-final-drive-cracked-case-3202109/
Setup is: 90 civic HB with turbo b16 (50trim t3/t4 @ 305hp), cable b16 J1 transmission, Quaife LSD, Gearspeed carbon synchros, stock axles and 205/50/15 direzza zII tires.
Do any of you that take your turbo car to the road course have any experience with various OEM and aftermarket final drives?
The only aftermarket option I have found so far for my transmission is the M Factory 4.92, but I would think that might be a little short for a turbo car.

Ditch the old school cable b16 trans. Buy a B16 hydro and get the conversion kit or put those internal is a ys1 case to stick with cable actuated clutch. The small spline transmission are crap and wont hold power.

Well, that's not what I want to hear even though I know it's true. Since the rest of the internals are still in good shape I may just try to find a cheap 90-91 LS transmission to swap the case and 4.4 final drive for now. If it blows again I'll reconsider. Just don't want to have to spend ~$2k for a new transmission, quaife and mounts right now.
I don't plan on doing any more HP upgrades for a while so I am good at 300hp, just focusing on getting better at driving.
I am still curious if anyone else has used shorter final drives with turbo cars on the track though.

Since time Attack and HPDE turbos tend to be small, they work well with these transmissions. but when yo're looking at 4.9, it gets a little too much torque up front to where you fight the control a bit later throughout the shorter courses. I typically keep the GS-R 2-4, and 1st in HPDE isn't really used like 5th isn't used in drag racing.
I say stick to 4.7 and you'll be fine.

The quaife is a direct swap in any b16a or LS trans cable or hydraulic. As long as its not an oem lsd B16a with the different ring gear bolts.
Yes it will fit B17A trans. However, good luck finding a genuine B17a tranny. All 92-93 trans are labeled YS1, GSR is rarer then hens teeth.
