Blew GSR motor turbo charging, go LS or STAY GSR KEEPING TURBO
I have recently put a DRAG III turbo kit on my 96 GSR. Make a long story short, Blew the motor after a few days after it was on. The boost gauge was screwed up so not completely sure how much I was boosting but it was fast a short time. The shop I took it to said it was around 6 lbs or so. Now I dont know what route to go. 1. Rebuild GSR with performance parts or 2. Found a 2000 ls motor with 27,000 miles on it at a junkyard for 1250, and just turbo charge it. Which motor would handle the turbo better?

i'd say go for building the GSR.. with some new rods, pistons, and a block guard you can crank up the boost a lil more, and still be safe.

I wouldnt do a lsvtec. I would build the GSR, but if you want to get your car on the road asap you can find ls block for cheap. Ive seen many go for $400.

daym... that sucks. i would hate to put my turbo on and blow my motor right away. anyone wonder why this happens to some people? i really dont think you blew your motor boosting 6lbs, considering it was well maintained and the kit was installed right. i see guys boosting 7-9lbs on their stock block. you might have boosted more and not even know it. rebuild your gsr motor and buy a LS to boost in the meantime.

is that 1250 for the complete drop out?? or just for the engine??? man that'd be a steal for 1250 if its a complete drop out..

Bulld the GSR, it seems like the people that build them have very good success. Get some sort of stanalone if you can, then crank the boost.

You can get b20b longblocks for 800 bucks. What exactly went on your motor? You get a rod through your block?

Yeah I'm curious as to why it blew too! I am deciding whether ornot to get a gsr and turbo that or an ls engine. I was leaning towards the gsr, but I wonder if whatever caused this blown engine is gsr specific or was it general probem that could ave happened on any car.

I can assure you, it isn't GSR specific. BTW, if you are planning on moderate boosting a GSR would probably be better, but If you're planning on boosting a lot, then you might be better off getting an LS, and spending the leftover money on internals or fuel mangement.

figure out why you torched it at 6psi first.

Oscar. This is Josh from UltraSpeed. I would definitely recommend you put pistons and rods in it. You need to make sure it was only your ringlands that broke and nothing else. Get a nice set of 81.5mm pistons and bore the cylinders out. I can get you pistons and rods and get them installed for you for waaaaay cheaper than that LS motor.

Re: Blew GSR motor turbo charging, go LS or STAY GSR KEEPING TURBO (GudeH23a)
So far I started taking the head off,and tommorow I will find out what is acutually wrong.I have a strong feeling that I fucked up the piston rings. Because I did a compression test and cylinder 4 and 3 were at 80psi and cylinders 2 and 1 were at 110 then I added oil and in 3 and 4 the pressure went up about 20 and 2 and 1 it went up to 230 approx.
standard compression GSR 270 minium 135 I believe that's right
I had a in line fuel pump which is GARBAGE
But the car was never running lean.
When I was boosting around 6000 RPM the car was misfiring Possibly DETONATION
