a bit confuse on tail wastege
Hey everyone, i just have a question about the tail waste gate. I have the 38mm with 11 psi spring, do i have to have a boost controller or just having the spring will be fine??
Or what are some ideas you guys have? |
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
11psi means that 11psi (based upon a good vacuum source) is the minimum amount of boost that is allowable. anything more, requires a boost controller
|
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
a tail is a part of an animals body, like a dog or cat. TIAL is a company that makes turbo parts. and TheShodan is right.. if you want to boost more than what your spring is rated you need a boost controller. the wastegate doesn't just magically make more boost when you snap your fingers
|
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
ok so i dont need one? i dont mine being at 11psi for a while
|
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
No, you don't need a boost controller unless you want to make more than 11psi.
|
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
don't be alarmed if you see slightly more then that (tuned properly ofcourse) due to some manifold/wastegate design, it can't regulate boost pressure exactly as per spring. Especially on bigger turbo's

Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
What map sensor are you running?
|
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
I was wondering myself that question. Im using a 3 bar map sensor and will be boosting more than 11psi. I always thought they could up the boost on a tune? and i always thought, if you got a boost controller...wouldn't that ruin the tune? because you would be putting more air than fuel into the motor causing it to burn lean or rich? That what i though of.

As for the boost controller, it's imperative that you have one installed BEFORE you tune, if you need to adjust boost levels accordingly, to reach a certain power level.

State your power goal, it may need more than 11 psi to achieve it, which at that point, you'll need a boost controller & an aftermarket MAP sensor. |

Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
Pressure source found based upon the Vacuum source used from say an intake manifold, smarty.

Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
thanks for the info.
I not sure what map sensor im going to run i got to talk with the tuner guy. so should i run the WG vacuum hose to the turbo or manifold or should i get the golden eagle vacuum manifold |

If your turbo compressor housing does not have a place for a reference source, you can drill & tap it (1/8 NPT). It's good to use 1/4" I.D. rubber vacuum hose. |
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
TIAL, what's the difference between running a pressure source versus a vacuum source for WG reference? I have a line on my WG from the intake manifold and it performs as expected.

Tial just recommends using a pressure source because they say using a vacuum source can damage the valve. A vacuum source will appear to work just fine but they say it can eventually damage the valve.
most turbos do not like 200,000 RPM :) |

that and if you develop a boost leak the turbo will still be controlled, you take the source from the manifold and you will free wheel that turbo and could possibly kill it.

Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
You do not want to put vacume to the bottom of the gate. Only boost source between the compressor and the throttle body. The valve in gate is not air tight so you will get a small vaccum leak. there is no need for vaccum on the gate only the BOV.

Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
Ok im a noob on a boost controller. I know it controls boost but my question is where do you hook it into????
|
Re: a bit confuse on tail wastege
Can someone also send me a vids on WG i don't quite understand why you would need pressure to the WG as you guys were recently discussing. I would like to learn more about it.
