Default bigger turbo is on.. car feels way diff..

i rebuilt my d16a6 motor today.. new rings etc.. while i was at it i took off my greddy log style mani and garrett t25 turbo and put on my ebay t3/t4 57 trim turbo with a ram style mani. car drives great but im not too sure about the turbo.. my t25 had crazy fast spool and alot of low end torque, which i kinda liked.. this turbo dont even spool till about 3500 and my redline is 7k so i dunno.. is the loss of low end torque gonna be worth it for the 1/4 mile ? i know it has more top end power which i felt but i dunno if 1/4 mile will be long enough to take advantage of a bigger turbo or not.. ( im using zdyne engine management. .5* retard per 1 psi boost)

You need to get it retuned with the different turbo.

Sounds about normall to me, When you are racing, you will stay above 4500 when shifting, so you will stay in full boost.

Zoinks, Scoob! Like, I think we found the culprit!

Dude, you put a different manifold and turbocharger on your 1.6L non-VTEC engine without a corresponding tune and you're curious as to why it feels different? Isn't that WHY you changed things: because you wanted it to behave differently?

Retune it, and if it's still laggy...put a 50 shot (or less) of nitrous on it to "pick it up". The nitrous will make the turbo come on quicker

??? JKov240 is correct. The nitrous will help pickup the low end... but you need to get it tuned for the nitrous as well...

You need tuning.

That's what we did with my brother's 300ZX Turbo and a customer's Supra Turbo and both worked out perfect...the Z went from a 13.30 to a 13.00 (and naturally a tune is needed)

What are the AR's of both turbos - the T25 you were using and the T3/T4 you installed?

Also, can you do a mini-me or throw a Z6 in there? It's not too expensive and it would help you out significantly, I'd imagine.

^good idea^

If it were me and money wasn't an issue...I'd redo the bottom end with forged internals (just in case) and do a head swap

So instead of getting a properly matched turbo to what you want, you spray it.. ha.

If you don't lik ethe lag, take it off and go with something smaller T3 based.

The T3/T4 that we put on the 300ZX helped significantly (more effective boost) but it bogged BAD off the line. The 50 shot was set up to turn off once the boost hit...it doesn't spray all the way through the gears.

Either way, it's a good combo...but it's all in the tuning

I understand the logic.. but was the turbo used to its full potential, that it needed to be soo laggy that you had to spray it?

Bigger turbos take more time to spool (especially on stock compression engines with stock internals).

Another example...we built a '91 Supra for a guy and he picked out this MONSTER turbo that was rated for 700+ at the wheels while the motor was built for 450-500. Naturally the turbo didn't hit full boost until 4,500rpms and the car redlined at 6K. Instead of getting a smaller turbo, we tossed the 50 shot pre-spool on it and voila...it came alive HARD.

Either you make more power up top with a bigger turbo or you use a smaller turbo and make less power, but quicker.

your missing the point. adding nitrous just makes things more complicated. get a smaller turbo that will better suit your needs. a super 60 t3 or just a 60 trim t3 would be nice for that motor

i agree that on a stock motor there is no point in running an oversized turbo. Run a smaller turbo, get the best powerband you can, and run enough boost to make the peak power you desire. I'd definately choose your new turbo over the t25 though. You could have gone with something slightly smaller, but i dont think its a bad choice.
