Best oil for Turbo?
What's the best oil to use on a B18C1 @ 9.5:1c/r w/Turbo @ 14psi?
What do you all use? I use Castrol 10-30 w/ factory oil filter and change it every 3000 miles. . . . .

I use Royal Purple 20W-50. Race teams use it and I think it works great. I change it every 3000 or less, depending on the color.
I tried Redline transmission fliud once. I don't know if the guy sold me the wrong one or what but I really hated it. Now I use Mobile One 10W-30 synthetic and whoa what a difference in smooth shifting!!! Trust me on this. As for Red Line engine oil I have never heard anything bad about it.

Dont use synthetic oil...hondas have problems spinning rod bearings with them. It all depends if you have a built motor or not and what you set the clearances up for. On a stock motor I would use 20/50 valvoline, the stuff that has race additive in it. I know that the turbo might want other oil, but im sure you want the motor to live too? On my race car, I just use 10/30 regular oil because thats what I built it for.

Re: Best oil for Turbo? (89civic1.8T)
I called Greddy one day to ask about why I was getting oil on the compressor side of my turbo and the person I spoke to said that the seals on the shaft like a real oil or a blend. Synthetic is too thin and the seals don't do as well with it. I'll never run synthetic again.

i totally agree with you on that one. on my friend's built gsr and my built b16 we both spun bearings using mobil 1 synthetic. the cause for both our motors spinning bearings is still undetermined, but it wasn't because it was assembled wrong, the motors had a good 20,000 miles of hard driving on them each.

Re: Best oil for Turbo? (SEFI8LOxCivic)
so are you guys saying Mobil 1 is bad for turbo motors? I am using Mobil 1 right now on my "just started" turbo motor and I dont want it to go bad in just a month or two!

Re: Best oil for Turbo? (pagong)
well, actually i cant say that mobil 1 caused me to spin a bearing... but its a strange coincidence that someone else mentions the same thing.
i wouldn't worry too bad. i ran synthetic since breaking in the motor. that's a lot of mileage for a race motor.
but like i said in the past... in my OPINION its more beneficial to change your oil more frequently with conventional every 1500 miles, than to run synthetic and change it every 3000 miles.
the thing is i think with synthetic, after running it for two years i started getting lazy/cheap and i would extend the intervals farther between changes. so, yea that wasn't smart of me, but don't say it can't happen to you.

I can not honestly agree with the claim that synthetic oil might cause you to spin a bearing. I have a fully built B16A2 and have been running Royal Purple before and after the rebuild. I just have never heard that before. I am hoping someone has more of a logical answer to it though!

I use Castrol RS 0w-30. The car flies with it, but I think its too thin. I used to use Mobil1 synthetic oil before, that seemed to work okay, just that it wasn't as fast as the RS oils.. I'm probably gonna swap back to using Mobil1 synthetic though, its a lot cheaper than RS, and I want longetivity on my new engine..

Been usuing Mobil 1 since 2200 miles, now at 102k miles, zero oil consumption
I was usuing Mobil 1 5w-30 every 8k miles b4 turbo, now it's 15w-50 every 3k with the turbo.

Castrol syntec 5w-50 for over 80,000 miles (over 40,000 turbo). Compression is still 190+ across all cylinders (integra rs, Drag 3 turbo).

Re: Best oil for Turbo? (DC2)
160k miles on Mobil 1 Syn, TT Supra. I'm the only person I know of with stock turbo chargers still running with this many miles. Compression was checked at 155k and tests within factory spec.

Re: Best oil for Turbo? (BlackGSR)
Forget brand, I want to know a couple of things...
WEIGHT- what is a good weight for a high psi, daily driven turbo Lude?(15-20 psi)
I was going to just put in a regular 5W-30 to break her in for the first 500 miles after I get the motor back and running, then drive for another 1000 on the same oil and change over to Castrol Synthetic in 5W-30 and then change every 2500. But should I be using a different weight for A. break in and B. after break in?
Personally I don't know exactly what each of the 2 numbers means anyway. 10W-30 is heavier than 5W-30 I know, but what does the 30 mean, and should I raise of lower that number?
I will only drive in nice 60-90 degree weather with my car also.
