Hi y'all,
This is my weekly progress report on my turbo R rebuild! I got a call tonight from Koyama Garage. "wanna see your engine in action" a voice says over the line.
I leaped to my feet (quite literally) and yelled, "hell yeah!"
"We got it all hooked up to the engine dyno and were just about to start her up, stop by if you got time"
If I got time? Hell, the fifteen minute walk to the garage only took 6 minutes.
"Wow! damn you're fast" he said...
"Oh yeah!...I move quick on stuff like this..."
I navigated my way through the garage. By now, I knew my way around pretty well.
On my immediate right I see a guy working on an old school Lotus Race car:
It look amazing, but my attention span was short because all I had on my mind was seeing my B18c in action on the engine dyno (pictured below).
It was amazing! The now Endyne/eagle powered B18cR started up effortlessly and hummed like sleeping kitten. The garaged had their own in house standalone ECU which they control from a control room with a Sony Vaio laptop. I watched as the technician made adjustments to the fuel and timimg maps as well as about a hundred different other parameter. With each changed, the engine changed its tone. The throttle, fuel pressure, oil pressure, and water pressure along with several other settings was controlled with a very complicated looking control panel.
After about 2000rpms, the engine stated to smoke pretty badley. I was concerned at first, but then mechanic smiled at me and said "uh...I thing we are gonna have to cut that oil soaked header wrap off of your downpipe. I hae never felt so relieved in my life....
They stopped the engine and unbolted the oil soaked DP and header wrap (the oil was from the blown pistons in my last setup.)
When they pulled the wrap off the dp actually fell apart at the seams. What had happed was, the exhaust got so hot, it actually melted the welds on my custom DP. (it was a quick but shotty weld job)...and the wrap was actually holding it together
. The took the now 2 piece dp to the back and did a proper weld job.
After about 20 minutes...everything was back for another run....this time a smokeless and perfect pull to a steady 2500rpms. water temp held at 78 degrees celcius (only 3 degrees hotter than stock)...couldn't tell what the turbo was boosting becase the didn't have a boost gauge hooked up. They ran the engine for 30 minutes and it purred flawlessly all the way through. They will do more test and break the engine through the weekend and it goes back in the R next week!!

nice car man, hope everything breaks in properly and runs well.
-in the laptop photo, is that program part of the power fc? i was thinking about getting one of those to control everything for my car, the power fc work well for u?

no its not the datalogic...this is an inhouse ECU made and programmed by this garage...they're pretty amazing!...It geared to get an idea of what the best running envronment is for the engine (similar to the autotune function of the Hondata and AEM EMS), then the technician makes fine adjustments.
The FC is good, but I need to get it tune which will be my next quest...looking for some FC tuners now..

so, did you have them put your oil return in your block rather than the oil pan?
someone was telling me that having the hot foamy oil running in above the level of the windage tray would cause potential problems. just wondering because I was considering doing that

Turbo breakin vs. NA breakin...it doesn matter as long as I don't get crazy with the boost. On the engine dyno, the engine was barely under boost because it was at 2500rpms or lower the whole time.

Besides the break in, the reason why we didn't rev the engine any higher then we did was because the computer that they have, takes about 10 to 15 minutes to autotune every 500rpm increment. So just to be able to get it to rev up to 2500, took about an hour of tuning. The rest of the map would take a few days to do, which is pointless, because I won't be using their ECU (couldn't even if I wanted to)...they just wanted to get it tuned enough just to test it and do some benchmarking...and fix any problems that may come up...the REAL tuning will come in play once the engine is in the car.

I wish it was as easy as that...but these values reflect what the engine is doing out of the car, and no tranny or gear box hooked up...not going to do any any good even if i could do it. The car will need to be tuned on a chassis dyno to ensure the most accurate tune.

Do you have pictures of the car? I was in the ITR forum, but wasn't there in time to see the pictures of your car. BTW, good luck with the break in.

This is a picture that someone criticized in the ITR forum. It was taken the night she came back. Its been raining so haven't been able to take any more...maybe this weekend..
