Re: ballbearing turbos? (o_no_vtec)
Most turbonetics are not true ball bearing. They have one ball bearing side and the other side has a thrust bearing like most standard turbo's.
And they ususally smoke a lot!
In the Garrett world, the turbo will have an "R" somewhere in its description which means it is a ball bearing turbo.
Most Garrett BB turbo's have lines for water cooling, where standard/race bearing turbo's do not.
EDIT.....many non BB Garrett turbo's have water cooling also.

Re: (96 GSR-T)
i used to have a turbonetics t3/04e that had water cooling but was a 360° thrust bearing. i don't know if there is any visual way to tell, but it you have a ball bearing side by side and spin the wheels, the ball bearing will spin about twice as long as a thrust bearing turbo.

if its ball bearing you will hear the turbo continue to spin for 20 seconds or so after you shut the car off.
and you can usually tell just by spining the turbo by hand. that is if oil has been ran through it.

Not to mention Turbonetics used a lot of ceramic ball-bearings which could take heat abuse but were very fragile. also made the cost lower, and could still say it was "ball-bearing".
