Default Brand of used turbo

I bought a used turbo from craigslist. I was told it is a t3/gt40. I do not see any brand on the turbo, and i thought a t3/gt40 had a .70a/r. The person i bought it from said it is not an ebay turbo.

Looks like a Precision GT3251E to me. Not a bad turbo for 300-350 range around
~15-17psi.

This is an old Precision turbo that had Garrett internals, when they had a Garrett contract prior to 2006.

A GT40 uses the same wheel ads the 61mm GT35R, and there is nothing wrong with this wheel being in a .60A/R, even if the original one was in a Garrett .70A/R. (The tell-tale sign is the CCE61 stamping on the edge of the cover, and it tells you it was a 61mm wheel originally.)

Now, the wheel looks aftermarket and modified in these housings, but better photos of the compressor wheel (cleaned up, please) would confirm that.

God, I love it when I'm right! (even though it happens very rarely.. )

Ok. Yes, confirmed. It is actually a Garrett 61mm GT35R compressor wheel. (The flash of the camera on the wheel itself threw me off for a minute.) It is an OEM wheel that is used as the GT35R, which is used in the GT40 as well.

This is part of the older "SC61XX" series from Precision, and was extremely popular at around 2004-2008.

The only problem with this turbo is the fact that.you're using a smaller turbine wheel that's shared with the "XX31" series, which was rather a crappy mismatch. Forget changing turbine housings to a larger A/R to get more than about 470whp at at bit over 25psi (1,7BAR) out of it, as the turbine wheel couldn't keep up with the compressor wheel's airflow rate. For a Honda B-series engine it was definitely better than a typical "eBay" turbo, but it was a usable, albeit very laggy turbo, they weren't that bad. You can have a Genuine Garrett repair facility use Garrett parts to rebuild it with no problem.

In essence, you were not ripped off, just given a turbo that had different housings from Precision.

Hope that helps.

Thank you TheShodan, thats exactly the information i was looking for. At least i was not ripped off. I did ask him if it was a laggy turbo, and he said it wasnt. If i understand correctly, the turbo is only good for somewhere around 450hp? Will it be extremely laggy? The turbo i am replacing is a turbonetics t3/t04e. It also had a .63 exhaust housing.

I answered the questions about "lagginess" in my previous post. There's no other interpretation to that.

You need to know what wheels are being replaced with. Saying Turbonetics T3/T04E with a .63A/R could be anything. It could be 450whp, or 650whp, capable, and could be equally laggy or super-responsive. You need to be INFORMED at what the wheel complement is, not just use general housings. Unfortunately, many look at only one side of the whole "cube" that is turbocharging.
