B Series Head Parts Inquiry
Hello fellas,
I broke my valve guides today(), so i thought that it is a good time to upgrade my fully stock head parts.
Spec:
1972cc 9cr B16A2(B18A2 crank(89mm), Manley Rods, 84mm CP 9cr Stroker pistons, Darton Mid Sleeves)
Watercooled T3/T4 Hybrid Turbo(Roughly Gt30 equivalent)
1 Bar of boost (Between 14.7-15.0 psi, peaking 1.1Bar(16psi))
780cc Precision Injectors
M&W Ignition kit(with Crane blaster coil, MSD Cap and NGK Spark Cables)
NGK Iridium Sparks BKR8IEX
Aeromotive 340LPH Pump
Methanol Injection Kit
ITR Oil and Water Pumps
Koyo Rad, Maradyne 13" Slim Fan
BRMS Ramhorn AC&PS Manifold(T3)
3" Free exhaust
Hondata S300
Oil catch can,...etc.
Stock Intake Manifold, FULLY STOCK HEAD
Now;
What valves should i get for my setup ? (1mm oversized ? OEM sized ? Supertech ? Ferrea ?)
What valve guides should i get ?
What cams should i get ?(GSC T1 ? Skunk2 Tuner 1 ? OEM ITR ?)
What Valvesprings, Retainers, and Valve Seals should i get ? (According to the cams)
Should i get aftermarket Rocker Arms ? IF so, what should i get ?
It'd be great if you fellas could make me a list for my setup.
Keep in mind that, it is a daily driver and i'll not increase the boost i've now, i even might make it 10psi with the extra power that comes from the cams. All i want is, longevity.
PS: I might get Edelbrock Victor X mani if i can afford it after the head parts.
Thank you very much in advance.
Peace...

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
Dont go with oversized valves. They are a PITA to deal with once you start upgrading cams from stock. I like Supertech, some people prefer Ferrea. Both companies sell guides. No need for upgraded rockers.
ITR or Tuner 1 cams sound like a good fit for your build. You can use a lighter valve spring for either cam. If you chose to go with Supertech Id recommend the SPR-H1002D spring set.
*Remember to get a valve job after the guide valve guides.

Ok, OEM sized Supertech valves, Supertech SPR-H1002D spring set along with other necessary parts(retainers, valve seals,...etc) and no need for aftermarket rocker arms.
What about, guides ? Which make and model ?
Last but not least, why not GSC T1 but Tuner 1 ?
Thanks again for the help.

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
GSC t1 cams are going to be to much for that turbo more than likely. GSC makes a really nice set of valves and valve springs and retainers. I would do standard size. ITR CTR or tuner1 cams Will work we'll with your setup. Supertech or ferrea bronze guides are good. The GSC CamsLike bigger turbochargers than what you have and the tuner1's have been proven to work very well with that size turbocharger your running

Got ya! Thanks a lot!
Skunk2 Tuner 1(won't use adjustable cam gears btw, i'm really scared of timings )
Ferrea or Supertech Bronze Guides
Ferrea or Supertech OEM sized Valves
are sure things.
Now, what i really wanna know is valve springs and retainers differences.
GSC, Skunk2, Supertech, Ferrea, Brian Crower,...vs. What are the differences ?(besides the 70lbs 85lbs difference) Titanium means what for springs ?... etc.

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
They all have different spring specs and you should get what skink2 recommend for spring specs. I wouldn't use super tech valves because all mine were warped and I've heard other people have that issue. GSC or ferrea for valves

Ok,
Skunk2 Tuner 1
Ferrea or Supertech Bronze Guides
GSC or Ferrea OEM sized Valves
What would YOU recommend for Skunk2 Tuner 1 cams spring-wise ?

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
The matching springs/retainers that Skunk2 recommends are applicable for FI applications too ? Since Tuner 1 is a NA cam, i question the appropriateness of the springs/retainers that Skunk2 recommends for the Tuner 1 cams.

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
could always keep it simple and just go with all skunk2 tuner series gear.
tuner 1 cam's, tuner series spring's & retainers and ferrea valve lock's and ferrea valve guides .. send the head out to have the valve seats cut

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
I've 2 last questions left:
1-) Does Ferrea Valve Locks sold seperately or do they come with their valve kits ?
2-) Skunk2 says:
"Although it’s not required, Tuner Series Camshafts should be degreed once installed to ensure proper clearances and optimum performance."
Does this mean i can use them with my OEM non-adjustable cam gears ? Since i won't bother with timing, i'd like not to spend money on adjustable cam gears...

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
1.) Ferrea doesn't sell kits. Everything is seperate.. and expensive. Also double check the degree of the keepers to make sure they will work with the retainer you are using. Some vendors may sell kits.
2.) Degree'ing cams just means finding the actual cam centerline which isnt always at 0/0 on every motor. Most dont do this step and just run 0/0. You'll be fine running stock cam gears.

Re: B Series Head Parts Inquiry
no lol its not awkward to ask questions... youl simply find that with a partslist such as yours and a not so commen engine setup it simply seemed odd to not have any parts for the head..
i was also refering to the rod/strock ratio as being a problem for dd and reliable.. but notice the pistons... so its an ls rod/stroke ratio. got it.
i will agrea with itr cams.. oem quality... i run skunk2 pro1s but wouldnt run the tunners... id stick with oem for that size of cam .
stock size valves. dished. ther lighter. it helps
def springs/Ti retainers.

@odz-fab
Yeah i know, it is awkward but i was out of money at the time so i had to do it with stock head and i understand you too.
Back to the question, can i do it WITHOUT the valve locks ? Can i use the OEM ones to install the new Ferrea ones ?
