Automatic trans
I have a 99 civic ex. I am about to buy my greddy turbo kit but my car is an automatic. If I upgrade the transmission with a torque convertor and a trans rebuild kit from level ten how long will it hold up?
http://www.levelten.com/store/import..._acura_pts.htm I searched and did not find exactly what I needed. Does anyone have any input? Thanks |
Re: Automatic trans (philip99)
It should hold pretty good depending on how much boost you plan on running. I ran about 8psi on my stock tranny and after about 6 months of hard abuse the tranny finally gave out on me. Just make sure before you do the rebuild kit to let of when the tranny wants to change gears, if you don't it will start to slip. Good choice on the turbo, it worked nice. Ran a 14.9@95 on the stock setting of 5psi. Big improvement from the low18's high 17's it was running.
EDIT: wrote months, just not how many [Modified by autoEXturbo, 12:59 PM 1/28/2003] |
Re: Automatic trans (autoEXturbo)
Thanks for the useful information. I plan on using the blue box so I will be running the stock boost. I think it is at 5.5psi.

Re: Automatic trans (autoEXturbo)
Another point of view...please read ALL of it. Again, its just one point of view, but i've heard many other horror stories... http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif
http://www.hondavision.com/showthrea...threadid=16404 Actually i was in the same situation, debating whether i should turbo my auto. I've been researching for almost a year now, and i'm going to give up on it. In a few months when schools out, i will be buying manual civic.... Too much trouble/hassles with the honda auto..and the level ten upgrade does NOT upgrade the valve bodies from what i heard. Also do a search, that should help ya out too Goodluck if you go through with it. I do think that you'll be fine, as long as you boost low, and not often. If you plan on taking your car to the track constantly, well, again, goodluck. Peace man https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/embeer.gif |
Re: Automatic trans (philip99)
I used the blue box also, but added a vafc and a 255lph pump. I honestly don't think the vafc mixed with the blue box did much. Even at 5.5psi i would say get the torque converter, you should see some low 14 sec passes.

Re: Automatic trans (autoEXturbo)
Do you think I would need to upgrade my fuel pump or would I be able to use the stockone?

Re: Automatic trans (philip99)
Stock will do if you stay at 5.5psi

Re: Automatic trans (ill_take_one)
Zex makes a torque converter too. I used nitrous on an auto. and it ate my tranny up. Be carefull

Re: Automatic trans (HybridcivicLS-T)
1. Do not use more then a 50 shit of nitro with your auto, you will blow it up
2. Do NOT buy the PTS kit from levelten, it will do NOTHING for you 3. Get a torque converter from pro-torque if you are so intent in getting one. Reason for #2 is because no matter what the fuck they put in it, they dont' TOUCH the valve body and you could have titanuam friction pads but it won't mean dick because no aftermarket tranny people for imports play with the valve bodies to get more CLAMPING pressure out of the tranny, no clamping pressure means slippage, means broken, means waste of time and money. Do yourself a favor, swap to 5spd, sell and get a 5spd or get a JRSC...... turbo I can almost garuntee you your tranny will show signs of partial throttle slippage after a year if that. Doesn't means its broken, but it means it will be eventually. My auto has taken HELLA abuse after almost a year she is still standing, still 100% stock not even so much as a tranny cooler, but my tranny IS showing signs of slippage during partial boost/throttle sometimes, and thats not a very happy sign. So heed the warnings, and don't listen to leveltens bullshit, I've met in person too many people fucked over by their second rate work and fabricated parts. |
Re: Automatic trans (shadowdawn)
listen to shadowdawn, he knows what he's talking about. I remeber when i was just going turbo on my automatic and we bs'd alot. He gave me alot of info.

Re: Automatic trans (autoEXturbo)
i have a turbo auto too. so the auto would die after how long. i will only be running on 5 psi daily. on occasion 7 psi.

Re: Automatic trans (mrod006)
it depends on how you drive it. My best thing was letting off inbetween gear changes. It helps with letting it change and not slipping as bad.
|
Re: Automatic trans (shadowdawn)
So if I did decide to swap to 5spd how much would everything cost total for all the parts I need?
|
Re: Automatic trans (philip99)
i guess that depends on the shop. I got mine done for around 1500 total. Practically a brand new tranny also. In the end it was worth it, but i did a motor swap also.
|
Re: Automatic trans (philip99)
at the most 1500. That's at the most. For labor and parts. You should be able to buy everything from a salvage yard for 550 or so. I was going to do the same. There is a web site that i found that sells you all the parts you need. Ill have to remember it. The swap is not that hard it's just time consuming.

Re: Automatic trans (HybridcivicLS-T)
Hey man, if you find that site, hook me up. I thought for sure it'd cost more than that to swap a 5spd in. I was just planning on selling my car, and then buying one just like it with a manual in it....
Thanks https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/embeer.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |
Re: Automatic trans (ill_take_one)
Ill try my best i just cant seem to remember. Just don't take it to anyone that has not done it before because that is the first thing they would say is sell your car..which would be alot easier but don't give up hope because it can be done.
