Assistance needed: Initial start after D16Y8 Turbo Buildup
Hello guys,
Over the past few months I've been building my d16y8. In short I acquired the vehicle in a trade for a old four wheeler. Head ended up with a crack and was never able to keep from overheating. Since Ive built a .20 over bored block Purchased from the machine shop. Fitted with a completely new head from the same shop with new valves retainers ect... Installed 75.5mm Vitara low comp pistons with some H beam rods and also did the block notching myself. In all, Ive gapped pistons, plasti gauged oil journals, and have taken as much precautions possible; with little resources at hand. Compression on all four cylinders have been 170psi across the board. Installed an ebay turbo kit to get me by until I can get around to a turbonetics build. Installed rc 440 injectors on an aem rail and fpr with a walbro255. Got in contact with a local tuner and sent me a map with all my characteristics noted for the initial start up until towed to him. Running Hondata s300 v1. My questions are. Are there any tips on my next step at my initial start tomorrow? Im very antsy and excited. I really don't want to miss something important. Ive good with my hands but this is my first car build to be completely honest. Ive built Motorcycles and dirt bikes but this whole learning experience has been another one for the books! Any input helps guys. I love coming to the forums and learning new things every time! Sounds pretty standard so far. Just make sure your thermostat housing ground was put back on and tightened down. Mine was still loose on my first build and when I was finally able to fire it up, it wouldn't. I shit a brick and scrambled frantically over a bunch of shit that didn't matter for about a beer and a half til I discovered that little issue. Tightened it down and BAM, she started. Other than that, just report back and post updates on how it goes! Good looking build. You'll probably max those injectors if the turbo kit is any kind of decent. Watch your oil return line. MAKE DAMN SURE there are NO POSITIVE UPWARD ANGLES WHATSOEVER. None. At all.. Even if you think it looks like it's possibly slightly sloped up; trim that bitch and give it a downward angle. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/honda-t...a85615cd7f.jpg Too many "cheap" turbo problems arise from poor return lines and give the lot of the Ebay units a bad rap. They may not be as efficient as the names they may be cloned from but, they can be good starter/learner turbos IF PROPERLY installed and maintained. |

I appreciate the input! I get her running today on the stock ecu! But when I plugged in my p28 with s300 my fuel pump doesn’t kick on. It was said to be sent with a base map. But I’m still in the process of finding a windows laptop to add a base map from my local tuner!
I found a little leak in my return line but so that’s another fix I’ll have to get to this weekend! Sent from my iPhone |

Double check all your work. Ensure there is oil (conventional) and coolant in the engine, and there are no leaks.
Here's what I did on the last 2 engines I built this past year: Pull the plugs, pull the ECU fuse, unplug the distributor, and crank the engine for 20-30 seconds. This will move oil up to the head. Reinstall plugs, ECU fuse, plug wires, and distributor plugs, then crank it up. Make sure the oil light goes out, check for leaks/noises, and let it idle until the radiator fan comes on. Shut it off, change the oil (conventional again) and filter, then follow the break in procedure here: Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power After 500 miles, change the oil again. Be aware that if you put a new clutch in, it may also have a break in period. |

Lthough I do plan on going to the dyno and putting it through it’s heat cycles. Thats a pretty evasive procedure... |

My last break-in went from 1st startup to tuning. **shrug** Well, after my 1st post warmup oil change. Lol

I've broken all my motors in hard. I would say frequent oil changes are much more important and often way to overlooked. Every time I drain oil on a fresh motor after an hour or so of running it I'm surprised at how nasty it is. |

Racked up enough miles to break in my freshly rebuilt motor and new clutch. Changed the oil and damn that shit was dark. I can see why an oil change is needed shortly after break-in period.
