Assistance needed: Boost creep condition during tuning
Hey there. I have a turbo lsv with a gt35r. Benefits trying to tune the car having issues with it boost creeping after its crossed into vtec. Holds steady at about 11 psi untill vtec crosses and then boost pressure climbs untill boost cut at 18 lbs. I have a tial 38mm wastelated that I know is good I just switch to this to try to fix it but did not work. I am thinking that the issue is the manifold and the wastegate placement. Since it is on the side and is 110 degrees from the air flow so when vtec crosses and flowing more efficient thag the pressure isn't making thag turn to regulate the psi so it creeps. I'm woundering what a good manifold that will fix this issue. Please and thank you.

which manifodl are you using?
go autoworks ac compatible ram horn with 44mm wastegate no issues here

I don't need a ac or ps compatability manifold. Tuner told me my 38 is fine just the wastgate location isnt. It's a I guess you could say a ebay ran style notorious to crack and creep manifold

Well if your so sure its not the WG size get a new manifold. Personally on a turbo of that size I would be more comfortable using a 44mm but either way sounds like the manifold needs to go

yes that also has alot to do with it...hmm I wouldnt consider 11 PSI very high at all thats actually low for what the 35r is capable of

I'm actually at 18. Which is what we are tuning for. But this was in wastage spring no controller. But normally a 38 is good if using a bigger turbo on high psi since it will only have to bleed off a little. Since a gt35r isn't that big of a turbo and 38mm is fine. Just when motor goes into vtec the motor becomes to efficient to remove the pressure to make a 110 degree turn to vent out the gate which is why I asked what other have used for manifold that have a good flowing gate location.

LOL! its not? depends what you considorr "big" i guess
so your not using a controller...what WG spring are you using? pretty sure you are using 11PSi spring. anyway there are quite a few manifolds not just 1 or 2....I already stated which manifold I use, generally any quality RAM horn will not give creep issues but then again most of those use a 44mm wastegate. sheepy, goautoworks, pfab etc etc

Ya so thats what I'm starting to see is they are mostly 44. Which sucks because I just got this 38. But I've noticed some ram style have the gate out the front which is a better placement that what I have but still isn't the best flowing investment noticestrategy some top mounts have a tear drop style gate in the flow of pressure. May just have to go with a 44. Ya i wouldn't saye a 35r is a big turbo I'd say it's a medium Maybe. It's the smaller compressor one as well .63.

You can only do so much if the waste-gate isn't a priority on the manifold. The turbo is to big to throttle down to such low output. Simply going to a 44 may not solve your problem.

You're forgetting that a smaller wastegate at lower boost pressure without a controller is going to experience this condition because you're running too large of a turbocharger (over 61lbs/min) at what is considered to be a lower boost level of 11psi, using a smaller 40mm wastegate (The 38MVS actually uses a 40mm valve size behind the fire ring). Unless your target is going to be a bit higher (at least 18psi), then this is going to continue to happen, even with a decent boost controller.
Regardless of the actual point of the location of the wastegate on that type of Kooks manifold (Be it 90* off, slight 'teardrop" forward, whatever), you're going to continue to experience this because the excess exhaust gasses can't bypass through the gate at such a low boost pressure level. You'll experience it less as you increase boost pressure. But if you plan to stay that low at any time for your build, you need to step up your 38mm 2-bolt or MVS to at least a 44mm gate with that type of exhaust manifold configuration.
Those are basically your two options.
