ARP Heastuds, two don't go all the way down
So im installing my arps on a d16y8 and two of them are being a problem. The rest seem to go far enough down just by hand tightening them, but the one in the nearest left and center right in the pic dont go down. Ive read that you can put the old studs in to try and clean the threads, but the old stud went all the way down. I also tried swapping the two studs holes that were the problem and they did the same thing, so i know its not the studs. Stud holes are also clean of any liquid and i have not put any grease on the bottom of the studs. How do i solve this if the old ones go in but the arps dont? Or do i just try crank them in with an allen wrench since all of them are just hand tightened for now (this sounds like it will just strip the threads instead)? Any help is much appreciated.
I tried to get a straight angle, but the two that are sticking out should be obvious.

I was wary of using any sort of lube or grease on the side of the stud that goes into the block because a) arp doesnt say to and b) im worried that it will affect the torque specs and something that goes in easier will also come out easier. Just some of my concerns and want to ensure they dont mess anything up before i do it.

mmmk, so i guess i misunderstood the directions. I didnt realize that i could tighten them down snug with the allen, i thought "tighten by hand" means you just spun them with your hand until they stopped. So i got them all further down, but they all dont seem to be exactly even (is this ok?). I put some of the lube on the studs that were giving me problems and allen wrenched them in and they went farther, but they make a creaking kind of noise. Is this bad? I got worried so i stopped before they were all the way down. Should i take another pic of where theyre at?

Re: ARP Heastuds, two don't go all the way down
you take a risk when doing it other than hand tight there maybe some issue causing it not to go all the way down, and applying more torque on it with a tool may cause bad damage man

so allen wrench was a nono? i just turned it with the allen till it stopped. i didnt all out turn it. so wut are my options? when i try to turn them the other way to take them out, they are stuck a bit but then start turning. Whats with the creaking thing though? It like skips from turn to turn.

boosting. The seller slodriver805 said they were new and theres no marks or scuff on the studs to show otherwise. Im boosting so im getting the studs and replacing the headgasket for insurance

What... sorry man but i really dont want to drop another hundo cause two studs dont fit. Like i said, all the others fit right, it seems to just be these two holes so im 99% sure that new studs will just end up with the same problem. What happens if you over tighten the studs? The two that were giving me problems are pretty far in and maybe like 3/4 in above the others. Were all your studs EXACTLY level when you installed them?

Take them out and use the stock studs to check the threads (mesh them together).
You really should use a tap to chase the threads instead of a bolt. I'd buy a tap if the threads check out.

i thought about tapping, but i wasnt sure what size/type of one to get. People were also saying that it was difficult to find a tap this long. Is it standard enough that lowes or home depot would carry it? The old threads already fit so not much i could to about those

Take a stud to Nampa auto parts (or another parts store). They will tell you the thread pitch. And see if they can order a tap for you if they don't have it in stock.

Re: ARP Heastuds, two don't go all the way down
Ok, well i guess im making a trip to napa tmrw. Are the studs literally supposed to go all the way down just by hand tightening and not using the allen? I just find it very hard to believe that even tapping it will allow me to do that considering how much crap ive had to go through just to get the head off. Also is there any way to tell if the stud has truely reached the bottom or is stuck? All the other studs besides the two giving me issues went in easily with the allen and all of the suddenly got tight (which im assuming means it hit the bottom), yet the one in the back left seems to be significantly lower than all the others.
