Default Anyone running a GT40R on a stock bore/stroke B16?

Just curious is all. I'm wondering how the spool compares to say a journal bearing T3 (say SC61, T3/67...etc.), and also how the power output compares. Thus I'm looking for dyno graphs.

TIA,
Bryson

That is way too much turbo for that motor in stock form.

You'll need some nitrous to spool that turbo.

Since when did they make a T3 GT40? I'm talking about the T4 GT40R.

Thats what they all say...lol. Geoff had his on the stock GSR, and had a pretty damn nice midrange. I'm wondering if anyone has had this setup and what they think of it. I'm mainly looking for a dyno graph.

That's a GSR though.... not a B16

I just switched from a sc61 to a gt4088. I put down 436hp on the sc61 on 15psi with tunning at inline pro. The car was never ran at the track so I dont have any #'s as far as times. I know on the sc61 it didnt start pulling hard till 6500 7000 and I rev to 8500 9000. I was talking to stan and he said that at most on pump gas I can push 13 psi on stock Block with arp head studs and inline pro head gasket. The car will be ready to drive once I get a tial 44mm wastegate and I will post some numbers when it is ready and tuned.

Don't even try it unless you do the valvetrain and rev it to 10k. GSR and B16 are 2 completely different animals when it comes to spooling a turbo.

Yeah, my SC61 is pretty laggy as well. I was just kinda wondering how the power output compared IF anyone had actually made the switch.

Well I do have a fully built head with valve train, but like I said, I'm 99.9% sure I'm not making this switch. Right now I'm just curious what the graph would look like and how it would compare to the SC61.

In fact, It wouldn't matter if it was a B16 or GSR...whatever. A back to back SC61 or T3/67 VS GT40 graph would be what I'm after. The B16 graph would simply give me something to compare to my personal setup.

Show me.

Most of those "T3/GT40's" that I've seen advertised are in essance an SC61, which uses the 35R compressor wheel.

i would say what the hell and just throw it on. tony is right about having the proper valvetrain tho. 10,000+rpm to have a decent powerband.

reason being is im throwing a 42 on 81.5mm gsr.

i have an ITS turbo (non ball-bearing) that is similar in size as the 4088r on a built 84mm bore / 77.4mm stroke b16.

64.5mm inducer (gt4088r = 63.5mm)
90mm exducer (gt4088r = 88mm)

P-trim exhuast wheel T4 housing

Here's my graph:
30psi. i usually rev to 10,200k, but for some reason it didn't record all the way.

I don't know if this helps, but i figured i'd post since there is not a lot of information on the b16.

and like tony said. dont even try to put a turbo this size on a stock stroke b16 without revving it to at least 10k. As you can see if i revved to 8k there wouldn't be much of a powerband.

edit:

oh and here are some pump gas numbers

HP 91 octance, 18psi

TQ 91 octane, 18psi

oh and if i had the time, i would love to do back to back testing with this turbo and a gt4088r. if all the garrett bb hype is true, i would have a the same power, but with a power band from about 7k to 10k which would be REALLY nice.

Thanks for the input guys! Amazingly enough, that turbo doesn't seem all that laggy, especially for the B16. And phil, it seems like your getting full boost at about 6K, which to me on a B16 is awsome! Especially for a journal bearing T4.

Bob, you wouldn't happen to have any low boost graphs would you? I'm wondering if your boost comes on any sooner than what that one graph shows?

You guys are talking about a couple of things I'm messing with right now so I gotta ask...I building a race car (no street driving) and I would like to make about 500hp at the crank. I'm really torn on what turbo to use. 60-1 or a sc61. I'd like to make it at about 18psi. What do you guys recommend. Also, what turbine size, I'm going to use a T3....63 or .82? .63 seems a little small for 500hp...am I right?

One other question too, can you rev to 10k on a B16 with ONLY good springs and retainers, or do I need to do something else too.

hmm kinda looks like my graph. torque peaks at the same spot.

and 157mph?? either it was making more than 610whp or the car is extremely light.

at 18psi i get full boost at around 6k, but at 30psi its more like 7-7.5K.

That sounds about right. I'm really thinking about trying it out now just for ***** and giggles. My SC61 doesn't hit full boost until about 5.5K anyways.

ya it was making more power on that run freddy said he saw 36ish on the gauge but the graph is the last time we had it on the dyno

problems with HT. Everyone always wants the following 3.

1. HUGE turbo's they DONT need, and WONT benifit their setup
2. HUGE cams.. Same reasoning above
3. HUGE slicks.. Same reasoning above (you dont need 26" slicks for 300whp)

You don't really know the whole story.

I have a new manifold coming out that will fit a GT40R into a CRX. I'm thinking about building myself this setup to help advertise it, as well as being able to push my setup to the next level. Of course I wouldn't be doing so without first building my bottom end. The rest of my setup can support it.

Before you go off making a final decision...remember always that a car that is maxing out a smaller turbo to make "x" amount of HP is always faster than a very large turbo hardly stressing to push the same HP level. This totally counteracts the idea of getting a larger turbo to "have room to grow". 500whp in a GT30R would smoke all those bigger turbo's making 600+whp.

Fat powerbands are always better than peaky ones. People say in drag racing circumstances, powerband doesn't matter, and has no effect....if that were the case, then all those avid muscle/drag car racers would be wasting their time with big blocks making TWICE the TQ over HP. (By the way, that means those motors have a powerband found in the first half of the RPM band, which isn't peaky at all)

The 2nd half of my post is only there to support my point in the first half of my post for those of you who might be confused. I really don't want any responses about it. It's what I believe, and that's just it. I'm directing the PURPOSE of the post to the one who is about to turbo a 1.6L motor w/ a turbo that could easily support a 5.7L.

so you think if i threw a 30r on my setup, i would go faster?

find a damaged turbo for mock up and get something that will better suit your application.. Putting a huge turbo on your manifold and running it on your car and not hitting full boost till 8k isnt really going to help advertize your products.. Since thats not a real world setup that an average customer would use.

Besides.. The sc61 will beable to 'push' your setup to the next level. Good design and quality of the product will sell it.. Not the fact that you have a 40r on your setup and its pointless.. You dont need to run it to prove that it will fit, just mock it up.

But you can do as you want.
