Anyone pull just the motor and not the tranny for a swap?
I had a motor go bad in my DSM and pulled just the motor and left the tranny and everything attached in there and it was a bit of a strugle. Has anyone done this in a honda. Ive gotta pull my wounded B20 out and put my GSR in and looking for the quickest way to do it. So i thought id get some opinions on doin a swap with the tranny beinf left in the car.

So its easier to leave all the tranny stuff hooked up and just pull the motor? Ive done a ton of swaps but never this way, ive always pulled the whole drivetrain. The biggest problem i had doin it in the dsm was the input shaft on the tranny, it was a pain getting the motor pulled out because of clearing the input shaft.

how the hell is that easier</TD></TR></TABLE>
yeah really. on our cars it is really tight. how thick is the clutch assy? i could understand if it were an automatic, the flex plate is kinda thin, but, yeah i dont see how the hell you can get the engine out with the trans staying in the car. i used to split them and put them in separately, but dont see a need for that any more.

I can only imagine lining up the input shaft while the motor is on the lift. I've never done it this way (except in a dsm), but dsm's are a bit different. On hondas I always pull the whole drivetrain with it.

Exactly, I have pulled and installed my fair amount of motors and I will always pull the whole deal (motor and tranny) out. It just seems so much easier in the long run.

that seems like it would be more trouble than its worth. Just pull everything.

i'm assuming since your gonna have the motor out you may replace the clutch, might as well throw a new throw-out bearing in... just take the whole thing out, and take the tranny off out of the car. much easier in my opinion.

Thats the only thing I have probs with. I've spent more time lining that up or makign clearance for it in my life than I would have pulling the trans.
The plus is that you're forced to replace trans fluid, and given the right fluid - any slight grinds go away. I have a trans that ground in 2 & 3, now shifts perfect w/new Honda MTF. Too bad the bearings are FUBAR.

its easier that way on the auto's like said above. if you drop the motor out of the bottom on a civic/integra it will def. take you longer to unbolt the trans.

Re: (Turbo-charged)
leave the trans conected and drop it through the bottom, u should have it on the ground in less than 2hrs.
Taking the trans off in the car is creating more work then u need to.

either its not worth the trouble to take just the motor out. plus if it takes you more than 30-40 minutes to take the trans and motor out then you'll be there all day
