Default Anyone here have shaft play with they're PTE turbos?

My freind recently just installed his 50 Trim on his DSM, and after about 20 miles, the damn thing already has a bunch of shaft play! It's not enough for the wheel to be hitting the housing, but it's definetly more than my SC61. It was installed correctly with the PTE install kit, and had more than enough oil too supply it.

I just don't understand how a turbo can take a **** so fast.

Anyone wanna chime in?

We've had a lot of trouble w/ PTE turbo's on DSM's as well. Idk if its just the DSM market or if everyone is having problems. Be interested to find out as well.

Yeah, thats exactly why I posted this here.

I'd also like too add that his feed line is taken from the spot that PTE reccomends, which is the oil pump housing.

Mitsu engine definitely have more issues with them than any other kind of import four cylinder engine. I came out of the engine rebuilding business and the Mitsu engine line was our number one mover. Honda was our slowest mover, which is a testament to the quality of their engine design.

In any event, you didn't tell us if the shaft play is in and out or up and down, but if you're not happy with this, please return so we can take care of this for you.

I know it's a hassle, but it's all we can do from here. If you want to call, we may be able to diagnose this better.

The shaft play is up and down. (towards the compressor housing).

Hey... ya I'm "the dsm friend"

The turbo does have shaft play. Not sure how much is exceptable, but I swear it had none before I put it in. I only put like a total of 60 miles on it.

Its not smoking and appears to run perfect right now. The play hasnt appeared to have increased from when I first checked it. I was pretty paranoid about contaminated oil and such and installed it all correctly. (Primed it, new oil line, correct location on the filter housing)

If it gets worse I'll pull it off and send it in, and get a line with a filter inline.

I checked with our repair dept. It doesn't sound like shipping damage. Most of the boxes that UPS drop cuase the wheel to not spin at all. They also tell me that turbos will loosen up as they get broke in. Keep an eye on it. Let us know what you want to do.

well checked the shaft play again tonight... seems fine to me, as a matter of fack I know it had oil in the bearings and it didnt seem as loosa as the first time I checked it.

but.... after only 120 miles, i find this

How many miles before the rest break off on their own? I'll have to send it back now regardless of shaft play.

o... and I never touched any bolt on the turbo. All I did was attach the feed and return line and bolt it to the manifold with new oem bolts.

You know what...I think they did.

Both of those Precision turbos that I had were clocked with the center sections outlet facing UP, and the compressor outlet facing UP (parrallel with the turbines inlet). Both came straight from precision.

I Would be willing too bet that extremepsi over tightened the bolts. Might wanna ask if they do clock them.

Oh...sorry I didn't pick up today, I was kinda in class.

We occassionally hear of problems with broken bolts on Mitsus and have just upgraded the bolt hardware. The problem is with harmonics, which also cracks exhaust manifolds. What's interesting is that this is the same hardware we use on everything else with no problems whatsoever. PM me with your address and I'll send you a upgrade set free of charge.
