Just wanting to know if anyone here uses a turbo blanket when track racing (not drags)?
Its ment to keep the heat in, but i dont know if this will be that good on the track when the turbo will allready be at some crazy temp....
Post up what you guys thinkg before i spend $$ on one

if your talkin about the little jacket heat insulation around the exhaust side of the turbo, i know a local mustang guy spent $110 on one, and swears it helped the spool, it was mainly for drag though

I have been running mine for over 3 years but I drag my car. Seemed to keep the underhood temps lower then when I ran without it.

well the theory is that the hotter the or more heat you can keep inside the turbine the faster the expulsion of the hotter exhaust gases wheater this is true idk

The thing about thermal energy - it pales on compairison to the kinetic energy that moving, pressurized air transfers to the turbine. There was a heated debate (no pun intended) about it regarding rear-mount turbos, and the EGTs were the least of the issues.

The best thing they're good for is under-hood heat reduction. I got some 1800F cermaic insulation thats 1/2" thick from mcmaster.com for $34, the stuff that does not burn (I tried) and does not transfer heat (held torch over it while in my hand...3 mins no change). I have 1 layer on my DP and 2 over the turbine, and after a hard run, the turbine mat is no more than 110F - the intercooler is usually hotter.

Mind tossing out a part # for what you used? There are a few options I found on Mcmaster.... and i'd like to try this route with proven insulation

This is the one, although it was $36 when I bought it. I also thought it was longer & wider - it comes in a fairly big box. Turns out its actually good to 2300F, and has no problems if it gets oil or water in it.


BTW here's another similar item that I got. At the time nobody had cheaper fiberglass insulation rolls, but eGay has them cheaper now. From what I can tell, its on par with fiberglass braid as far as heat conduction, but also take 2300F, oil, and water.

btw the only downside to the ceramic mat - you'll get funny looks if its not wrapped tightly with stainless wire in a very asteticly-pleasing fassion. One of the younger dyno opperators asked me why I had a pillow under my hood He didn't realize it was a topmount turbo...and I didn't have time to put it on very well.
