Any experiences with wraps and heat shields?
I'm going to need to wrap some stuff up underneath my hood. I'm running a sidewinder V2 and need to protect my distributor other items. I've been thinking that wrapping is going to be the best way for me to acheive this protection. Any one have suggestions on good affordable stuff? I've been looking at this companies stuff.

I use DEI on my NA car and it's great....do some research though, you really don't want to wrap a street turbo manifold. downpipe and wastegate tube can be wrapped though

I went with thermal coating on manifold and turbo exhaust. (full race mani)
DEI wrapped my downpipe.
Firesleeve on my oil return and oil feed lines
I also noticed the full race mani started to oxidize the paint on the top of the hood, so I bought some exhaust tunnel insulation stuff similar to whats on VW firewalls, and put that down the underside of the hood where the mani is.
My mani also melted completely through my AC lines, so I am going to have them custom made by Amazon Rubber & Hose CO.

Thanks anyway Dasher!!
Most likely I would have to have them custom made anyway, the come too close to the mani to hold up. I'm gonna run a rubber ac line down through the AC dryer hold near the drivers headlight and run hose where the bumper support would be (mines removed) and then around the other side back to its orignal connection on the pass side.

I can understand not wanting to wrap up a manifold unless you have to but if your familiar with the design of the sidewinder V2 you'll realize that you absolutely need to shield some of the components under your hood. From what I've read the problem with wrap is when you over wrap. Most of the manufacturers recommend no more than a 1/4" overlap of the wrap any more can lead to excessive heat being kept in the manifold that can weaken the welds.
Thanks for all the info guys.

FWIW the turbocharger wrap from DEI sucks. The 2nd layer of wrap has a foil outer surface which melts and burns up on the turbo, then eventually falls apart and looks like ****. This all takes place over 3k miles....weak.

Werd. Mine looked great for a little bit longer than that but it still fell apart. I hear good things about the turbo diapers, though.

Re: Any experiences with wraps and heat shields? (beepy)
what is turbocharger wrap?
I used the header wrap, looks like braided nylon rope, about inch wide (comes in 2" wide too)
The DEI floor and tunnel shield is what i used on the bottom of my hood.
check out this thread I made about turbo blankets, different ones and where to get them.

Like it was said before, the wrap can hold in too much heat, damaging the manifold over time because on street cars you have many many heat cycles. I have heard of cast manifolds starting to flake apart when they were over wrapped. None of this applies to an SS autochrome manifold though, they will withstand anything.
