no way ur going to pass with the turbo on. as for the jdm engine, make sure u got the papers for it. got to a smog shop and do a pretest..fix the problems before u go the ref.

papers showing that the engine is legal won't cut it. you need to have the smog ref put a sticker on your car approving the engine. (needs to have all smog devices.)
once you have that sticker u can get the motor smogged at any smog shop, but not with the turbo (at both the ref and the smog shops) unless u pay em off.

but u see its not even the turbo that will fail you automatically.. but thn you have the motorswap.. i passed mine in the smog ref but you will not cause its jdm.. the ref told me no matter what the jdm will not pass.. and believe me they do check! it will pass the sniffer however but as far as visual nope.. and for inspection there gonna check the numbers too see if everything matches up.. and u wont be able too pass that probly.. but maybe if u pay some off and have yer smog receipts, then they will over look it in the inspection however i really do not know i juss know yer supposed too go to the ref if u have a swap too get yer sticker.. but jdm and no carb turbo dont pass you... smog~~~~> i miss michigan were i can do anything i want too the car! o well cali rules thou!

It goes like this.
You bring your car in for inspection. The guy opens the hood to see *If it is as delivered from Honda.* If the answer is no, the hood is closed and you fail. End of story, no emissions test is run.
If you insist on getting it, here's my understanding of what you must have to pass. The engine must be the same year as the car, or newer. The car must have all the smog equipment to go along with the year of the engine. If the car has a turbo, header, or any other component effecting emission, it must have a CARB exemption sticker on it.
Short story: don't buy the car.

You can't pay off smog refs, they work for the government.
Your best bet is to register it in a non-urban area (basically, stay away from the bay area, sacramento, l.a., san diego, etc).
You'll have to pay off a local smog shop to pass the car as a stock civic.
If this does not work, you'll have to pull the turbo kit and try to take the car to the smog ref and pass it as a USDM Del sol motor (has been done).
If that doesn't work, you'll need to drop a cx/dx motor in the car and take it to the ref. THen it will pass for sure.

the BAR/CAR website was updated... they allow jdm motor swaps now as long as they retain all the smog equipment from their counter-parts. i was pretty shocked when i read that.

Re: for all you california turbo owners (BlueShadow)
JDM motors will pass california state referees. mine is JDM b18c and i passed it. there are some smog equipment missing however. ie(evap canister purge solenoid) u can get those off any latemodel hondas, and wire it into the ecu. also, if ur car is obd-1, then it is much more easier. Now, i have a drag3 turbo on it, so i won't even bother taking it to a smog shop without taking off the kit. it also depends on how **** the smog ref is. it took me 3 tries to actually get my BAR sticker, cuz there was no one that even attempted to smog a jdm motor back then. good luck.

don't sweat it! A lot of smog shops actually don't really do much for the visual. If you find the right shop, they'll just pop your hood and hook up the rpm pickup to your spark plug wires, and won't really care about you have under your hood. you WILL have to worry abuot passing the sniffer though.

dam man, if u wanna be fast in cali, and wanna drive it on the streets, its tuff.. trust me, i've been through it. Even if some people u know of, may have smog hook ups, they might not even give it to u, if they dont trust u. because if the shop gets caught, there goes their license.. and most of these guys i know, make at least 70 to 80k a year, and they're not gonna risk it for a lousy 100 bucks. u know what i mean? thats why those guys with 69 camaros or mustangs are so lucky...those sOb's ..

Re: for all you california turbo owners (BOOSTINSI)
I think he's talking about buying my car, hmmm there's no way this car will pass emission in CA. First it has no cat, so I highly doubt it you can pass emission w/ no cat. Well the time has come that I need to sell my car quick so I just put it on ebay the price its pretty good IMO... so if you know anyone that wants to buy a car give them the link thanks http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1835850107
