to all my FI friends. some help and support please
so last Sunday my mom fell and broke her back. She compound fracture l5 and shattered part of it, she still has full sensation and movement but she's in surgery right now trying to repair the damage and I don't know what's going to happen. I'm freaking out so bad because I'm the only person here that can do anything for her as far as help because the rest of my family lives too far away and I just don't know what to do.
so if you could just keep me and my mom in your thoughts and prayers because the road ahead is going to be a hard one
I greatly appreciate it

Sorry to hear this Wantboost. I've been through a load of **** myself recently as well, nothing compared to what you've described though. It's hard to pull your focus together...
I wish her all the best anyway.

That's awful. My girlfriend went through something similar and has two discs way out of whack now, she's alright most of the time but has to go to a chiropractor when the pain gets really bad. That being said I think your mom will be alright, stay positive and do your best to keep yourself and her focused on the good things in life.

Thanks all of you, this is why I only hang out in FI lol
She got out of surgery a little while ago the surgeon said everything went well. She's supposed to stay in the hospital till Friday but we have to talk to the surgeon first about her recovery time, rehab time and stuff like that since she'll go straight from the hospital via ambulance to the rehab place

best of luck to you and your family. try not to worry to much. it only makes life remorseful. im sure shell be alrite with all the medicine and practices today.
my wifes a nurse. she said it sounds like shell need a plate and pins. and as long as no nerves were damaged or nothing was severed, she will be fine in time.
so if she can still feel and move, i think shell be alrite.
i now how your feeling having to hear terrible info to your mother. i gota call, with her saying she had cancer outa no where.

Thanks guys. She's doing pretty well right now. They used bone cement to repair the damaged vertebra. Only two tiny incisions. The real question is how does this affect the rest of her life (she's only 61)

if youve never had any kind of back injury, then it sucks to tell you but, she wont be the same. i had a muscle strain in my back in 2005. now i get back spasm every so often, and this is just from muscle strains. if she hasnt had arthritis in her back before, she prolly will.
people with broken bones or fractures are more prone to arthritis than other. but theres wonder drugs for that though.
back injuries suck.!

Hope her to a full recovery but I'm with ls_joker on this one, back injuries are very difficult to fully recover from. Since I'm in the med field, I see back injuries all the time and even with thorough therapy, only approximately 20% of patients fully recover. Not saying it can't be done, but as long as she's healthy then things won't be to hard on her or hard on you. She may not fully recover but should be able to function with doing everyday things.
My own personal experience: I was in a car accident back in 2000. I was rear ended where I was at a complete stop and the person hit me going 45mph, I ended up being sandwiched with the car in front and the one who hit me. The sheriff who measured the speed said 5mph higher and I would never walk again, says I was lucky to be young at that time to be able to walk out of it. Long story short, I had a massive sprained back and chest wall contusion from the seat belt. I went through therapy for 3months and was released because I was able to bend forward at enough of an angle for the MD to release me. Til this day, I still have back pains but it usually only happens on cold days/nights. I'm able to do everyday things without problems. Hell, I even was maxing double plates(225lbs I think) 1-1.5 years after the accident. I'm probably at 85-90% recovery to being full, like I said I'm only affected when it's cold.
Once again, wish and hope her to a full recovery!

Going through some family illness stuff here too. Hope everything works out for you and your mother. If there's rehab therapy to undergo makes sure she does it religiously.

Best of luck to you marc, hope it all works out the best way possible.
My mom seems like her old self so far. We got the injury repaired so quickly the doctor said there should be little to no ill effects. As they internally braced her vertebra using the cement. They do want a physical therapy regiment and she's arguing about it but I'll hopefully get her to do it. I need to talk to the doctor because I'm hearing she needs rehab from one side (nurses etc) and haven't heard first hand from the admitting doctor nor surgeon. But the nurses and IV teams are super nice

Thanks. It's my younger sister and cancer. Prognosis is good. She was in surgery 2 days ago for 10 hours.
Nurses oftentimes seem to know more than doctors. Make your mother do that therapy/rehab. I've seen what happens when people don't follow through.

Re: to all my FI friends. some help and support please
Oh man I am so sorry. It always seems more difficult when it's a young person. But she has to be a fighter because she's related to you lol... I will keep you and your sister as well as your entire family in my thoughts. I've had numerous family members battle cancer more than once so I know how hard it is
I'm pushing pt/rehab... she didnt do it when she broke her left foot and ankle last year and she's paying for it for sure. And now with her right foot and ankle broken abd add on a compression fractured vertebra and you've got a bad cocktail. My concerns are if she doesn't do it that later on arthritis will attack those weak spots first

She will always hurt in those areas from now on. She just doesn't want to limit the range of motion or functionality she'll have.
And my sister can get as ornery and be as stubborn/tough as I can. Whatever happens, she'll handle it like a trooper.
We should make this an official/unofficial support thread.
