Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
OK. Here is a link to the previous thread I was on about this....
https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/running-out-gas-3-4-tank-2629800/#post45278065
I just figured there's probably a lot of aftermarket pumps in this section, so I wanted to see what you guys thought, and if you had any issues.
Basically the short story is that after I install my 255lph Xenocron pump, I run out of gas at 1/2 tank mark. The stock pump works fine. I've tried all different combinations of changes with the Xenocron pump (stock/their rubber hose on top of fuel pump, their/stock fuel sock, adjusting the fuel sock, etc). I know your'e supposed to keep above half a tank with an aftermarket fuel pump for cooling reasons, but it would be nice not to HAVE to fill up after about 150 miles (I drive 50+ miles a day). And I'm going to need this pump for my turbo build, so I'm in a hard spot.
I will probably be calling Xenocron today to see if they have any suggestions/help. Or maybe they'll post on here as well. Anyways, I'm just looking for whatever help/advice/experience stories I can get. It seems like on the other thread, and a couple more, I'm not alone. Thanks in advance HT!

i know there was an issue with possabley having to use you stock/or an oem fuel strainer at the bottom of the pump. look into that.

i dont think it has anything to do with the brand fuel puml you have. i have had a few of the xenocron pumps. id suggest seeing if you can find a new/oem fuel strainer/sock and go from there

I've used both the stock sock and aftermarket sock. Both give same issue. I just ran out of gas this morning with a stock sock. I'm going to pull the pump this weekend probably and do some testing. I should be able to narrow down where it's sucking in air

Replace the pump with a Walbro 255. Doesnt matter where you buy it. My advice is dont be cheap on fuel system components even if sold by one of our sponsors. I had same pump fail. Replace ASAP..

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
Some cars just don't like low amounts of fuel with a high flow pump. A find of mine has a da and when he gets to 1/4 tanks his car starts sputtering. My dc I can run down to gas light on and needle below the e mark no problem. But I agree 1/2 tank is a little much.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
I read your thread previously, and I haven't had any issues with mine in that way. It works fine as long as fuel is above 1/2 a tank. And if you check other threads about the same issue, it happens with Walbro's too so you can't say that it's because it's a "cheap" pump.

Check and make sure as well that your tank isnt dented "up" from the bottom side or that there isnt anything corroded and collapsed on the inside of the tank that could be causing something.
Its definitely how the sock is positioned placed or possibly how the pump is secured to the hangar.
Maybe take a picture as you tank it out of the tank this time and post it up so I can see...
You can email it to me as well if you like and I can help you there.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
Thanks for the response xenocron. I'm going to try to pull it out of the tank this weekend and do a bench test for where the flow stops on the level of the pump.
I don't believe that the tank is dented, and everything looks good inside of the pump.
I'm just really stumped with this issue because the stock one has worked with no issues (more than once) after the aftermarket is removed. I'm thinking that where the sock meets the pump or where the pump meets the rubber hose is where it's taking in air. These are the only things I changed in the last install. I will take some pictures this next time as well.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
I had this issue with my Walbro 255 in my 89 Civic HB but it was a 1/4 tank or less that caused the problem. Issue was resolved by using the stock sock which is WAY longer than the one shipped with the pump and goes further down into the tank

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
The 341 pump setup for the 90-93 Integra and 89-91 Civic is positioned differently than the 342 pumps for the 92+ Civics and 94+ Integra so the pumps and socks fit differently.
Just make sure that as you are placing the pump into the tank, its not getting bumped loose or wedged to the side, putting these pumps in the tank is like playing "Operation" without touching the insides.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
xenocron, thanks for the response. I'm also really careful when I put the pump back into the tank.
I didn't have a chance to pull this pump this past weekend, but I plan on doing it tonight or some time this week. Only getting a half a tank of gas is getting old! LOL However. I did stumble across this post from another member about an issue that was resolved with his pump. I've been thinking that this is the problem with mine (as the sock seems looser on the xenocron pump), but haven't had a chance to confirm.
Here is the post from the other member:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently had an issue with installing a Xenocron pump as well, but my experience was the complete opposite.
The stock pump was going out in my hatch, so after some research and a recommendation from a friend, I ordered the Xenocron $59 pump. When I recieved it, I installed it the same day but the car would not start at all with it. I tried everything I could possibly think of, but it just wouldn't start with the Xenocron pump in it. Frustrated, I emailed Chris and got a reply fairly quickly. We exhanged ideas back and forth a few times, then he asked that I send it back. After he recieved it back, he did some testing and even sent a video showing my pump sucking gas out of a bucket to show that it wasn't an issue with the pump itself. The issue lied with the sock. Although I tried both the sock from my factory pump, and the sock sent with the Xenocron pump originally and neither worked, when he sent the pump back he sent a new sock with it and the car started right up on the first try. The new sock fit noticably tighter on the neck of the pump, so it makes perfect sense that the other socks that wiggled around a bit were letting air into the pump and making the fuel pressure very weak.
I was more than happy with the service I got from Xenocron. For a $59 part, it was much better service than I expected from the owner of the company. If it weren't for the fact that I just sold my hatch yesterday, I'd definitely do business with them again without a doubt.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm looking forward to testing my pump outside of the car to find out where it's sucking in airl. I will probably even make a video of it if possible. Thanks for all of the feedback so far.

will jb weld hold up in gas? id seal the sock to the pump so its air tight and will not fall off.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
I've thought about using some kind of sealant, but then went away from that idea. I don't know of much that would hold up in gas, and if it didn't I wouldn't want it floating around in the tank.
Also, I shouldn't have to use a sealant to make this work. It's worked for a lot of other people so there's got to be a better way to fix it.
Thanks for the brainstorming though!

OK. Did the bench test last night and it was sucking air in at the junction where the sock meets the pump (like I was thinking). I emailed Chris at Xenocron last night too, but the shop was closed. Hopefully I'll hear from him today so we can get this problem sorted out. I reinstalled the stock pump again too so that if he needs the other one back I can ship it to him. I'll keep the thread updated as well.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
I had the same problem in my 92 Hatch with the Walboro 255, the problem was that they shipped me the wrong pump. I replaced the pump and problem solved, the wrong pump would make my guage stick at half also.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
Just an update....
I'm pretty positive I found the issue last week after communicating with Chris at Xenocron through email. I'm going to wait to share all of the details after I have got the issue resolved with them. I'm going to be shipping my pump back to Xenocron today (hopefully), and I would think could hear something back in a week or less.
Thanks for all of the ideas and everything up until now. Hopefully I'll have a new pump by the time I'm ready to drop in my new shortblock.

Re: Aftermarket Pump Runs Out of Gas at 1/2 Tank
OK. Now that Xenocron has sent me a replacement pump (great service), I can update this thread a little bit. The problem with my last pump was a crack in the plastic at the bottom of the pump. This was causing it to suck air in there vs. through the sock. I'm not sure what caused the crack, and I'm not going to speculate, but this was definitely the problem with mine. If I can remember later as well I will upload the picture of the crack and post it so everyone knows what I'm talking about.
I've got my replacement pump and I might be installing it tonight, so I can let everyone know how the install/operation goes with it. I'm thinking though that as long as this one doesn't have the same issue, I should be good to go. Wish me luck!
