and after 138 trouble free miles we have a problem
While cruising around this morning i heard a few rattles and thought it was just my window net hanging on the floor of my car. I thought nothing or it since my car is a rolling tin can and has a milliion rattles. Well it got real nice in the afternoon so i decided to keep putting some miles on the car to break it in and then i get a few tings and metallic diturbances under the hood. At idle and at part throttle and low revs. I knew the sound of it and sure enough it was true. The turbocharger had blown. It was the blades scraping the inside of the compressor housing. I figured im only 2 miles from home so i said screw it ill drive back the damage is already done. So i get home and shut it down and the check the shaft play. It is so loose i can move it nearly a 1/4 inch. I am going to call the place i got it from and see if they will do anything for me since i only had the turbo on for less than 3 weeks and only racked up 138 miles. Any idea what could have went wrong? defective turbo? something i did? any ideas?

The turbo is a 60-1
As far as i know the oil flow was fine. I upgraded to a larger turbo this year and im using the same configuration as before for the oiling system to it. The return is a little tight but its not backed up or anything. Its also an LS so i upgraded to a VTEC oil pump. Im not sure what my oil pressure is but it must be fine the light is not on. I had it come on a couple times but both times my car almost stalled bacause it was revving around 600. Im going to call tomorrow and see what they can do to rectify the situation.

the same thing happened to me. where is your oil pressure line to your turbo coming from(oil pump, oil sending unit,or head)

I have it taped off the sending unit. I have had 4 different turbos on this car and this is thw only one that took a crap on me. I was told to send it back and the company will take a look at it. i have a bad feeling that they are just going to tell me that i need a rebuild and that its gonna cost me some loot because theya re not very talkative about the matter on the phone.

the reason i asked is that if you tee into the oil sending unit the oil going into the oil pressure line for the turbo is unfiltered(the fitting is bfore the oil filter).
since this is a freshly built motor i would bet fine metal shavings from the machine shop has got into the turbo. all it takes is one very small peice to eat up the bearings in the turbo since it turns over 50,000 rpms. i ran my oil line from the plug on the back of the head which is after the filter and have had no more problems. you can also install a transmission line filter in between the oil sending unit and the turbo. i hope they do replace your turbo free of charge but will probably tell you what they told me (metal in the turbo). post it when you find out and let us know.

Re: and after 138 trouble free miles we have a problem (TurboSohc)
Yeah i primed the turbo and my oil was not bad at all. It was a little gray but mostly due to the use of the moly lube when assembling the motor. I held the oil up to a light and dont see any metal flakes and it dont feel gritty. I dont know i just sent it out 2 day air so they should have it on Wednesday. There goes the cash stash i had put away for the nitrous.
