Advice on Oil Pan Gasket!!
Alright I just got my B16 broken in and running 10 psi for now. First time I went out and boosted it with my tuner I blew the oil pan gasket. After one minute of letting my car sit there was about a 12 inch diameter circle of oil under my car. So I ripped it off and installed another gasket (bought from autozone and installed with a little RTV) and torque to 9 ft./lbs. like I'm suppose to. Went out after letting it sit for about 18 hours for the RTV to cure and first time I boosted it I blew it out again. I was wondering what oil pan gasket all you high horsepower guys are running to prevent the gasket from blowing out. I heard that OEM gaskets from Honda have little metal rings in them to prevent the gasket from squeezing out when you torque them down. The ones I got from autozone do not have these little rings. Is this just a myth or do OEM ones actually have the little rings? I think I need to get an OEM gasket instead of a crappy Autozone one?
By the way I have a catch can so I don't know why this is happening.
Any help is appreciated.

the OEM HONDA gasket is better than any other brand out there, I think your problem was when tie it down you are not supost 2 torque it just hand tie it ''good luck''

Also, I found that Carquest sells the OEM gasket. It looks and feels identical. It is in a Carquest box though. You might be able to save a few bucks. Maybe or maybe not!

Alright do you know if the OEM gasket has these little metal rings around the bolt holes that prevent the gasket from squeezing out??

Yes, it does. That's fact, not hear say.
If you don't have the original ones that came with your B16, then go to your local/friendly Honda parts department.

Yeah, one from a dealership parts department is best. Check to see if the gasket comes with these little rings. If it doesn't, then ask about them. Also, use sealant where it is necessary.

I have been running a autozone oil pan gasket and head gasket for over a year making 505 and never had a problem. Are you sure your oil pan is not warped or something in it making it not seal properly.

it could be I am going to take it off tomorrow again and check for flatness. If it is my buddy has a b17 oil pan and he said I could have it to use. I might try that along with an OEM gasket. Hopefully this will solve my problem.

I think this is the root of the problem. If you are blowing out the gasket, you are probably experiencing high crankcase pressures. Are you still running the OE PCV Valve? How is your catchcan set up?

I was gonna say lack of catch can, or somethin messed up with PCV...
but warped pan could be another culprit...
Im runnin stock PVC for now, and I havent even heard of anything like that happening

Once I went turbo, I bought the moroso pan and have had problems getting the pan gasket to seal my c1 block. I had the OEM pan gasket, could not get it to seal, went to checker and got the FEL-PRO gasket that didn't work either. My OEM gasket did not come with the rings...maybe that's why it was leaking? I also removed alot of the studs and just replaced them with bolts.

Well I got another oil pan from a friend today. I got it tapped I just need to get a gasket from Honda tomorrow.
My stock PCV system is removed and I have the fittings from honda screw into the block going to the catch can. I also have the other nipple right underneath the intake manifold and the valve cover fitting going to the catch can. That is all of the venting I need correct?
Hopefully with a new pan and an OEM gasket I will be alright

Uh, based on your description you have a catch can with the crankcase, intake manifold, and valve cover connected to it. Is your catch can vented to atmosphere? If not you're pressurizing your crankcase. Why won't using ultra-copper and bolting it right to the block work? (That's how Toyota does it - just wondering)

Yes I have a catch can that is connected 3 places to the block (2 off of the fittings you buy from honda and screw into the back of the block and another one off of a nipple that is right under the intake manifold that is used with the stock PCV system) then I have a line coming out of valve cover.
My Catch Can is vented to the atmosphere with about an inch and a half diameter hole in the top with no filter.
I had this same catch can and similiar plumbing on my boosted single cam and never had a problem.

so...what model of car are you ordering this pan gasket for that has the metal rings? I've never seen this...I don't think they come with it. I've gone to the Acura dealership and honda dealership.

I am ordering them for a b16a3 motor from a 1994 honda del sol Vtec model.
Well I just looked at the two previous gaskets that were on my car that blew out that were both bought at Autozone. They both had two small metal rings that were but were only present on the holes closest to the flywheel.
I also looked at an original oil pan gasket that was still on from the factory from a b17 oil pan and it only had two metal rings in the same 2 locations as well.
This must mean that there are only 2 metal rings and are located closest to the flywheel. I will buy an OEM gasket and try this different pan (b17 pan) and see if it fixes my problem.
