Default adjusting cam gear timing for .074 head gasket

HT Members,

I have tried to search and the best thing i can come up with is to retard timing 4 degrees for both intake and exhaust via my adjustable time gears.

question is this correct?

set is bone stock USDM B18C5 bottom end (81mm) with PR3-3 (ITR) head. stock '00 us itr cams with buddy club adjustable cam gears. Head gasket is a cometic .074 5 layer. ARP head studs (I don’t think that matters) block is not milled head was resurfaced -.004

thanks for any help you all can give me like i said i tried to search and just want to get a concrete answer so i don’t F my motor up.

Best thing to do is degree in the cams even if your running stock this will time everythign properly with a milled head and block or thicker/thinner head gasket

However i lack the tool to degree in the cams properly. Im just trying to get it running to i can drive a bout 100 miles to get it tuned and dialed in completly

With the cam gears set at 0/0 line them up so they are at TDC. Then I loosen the cam gears and rotate the crank until its at TDC. The difference should only be 1 or 2*. Its easier with OEM cams bc you can pin them at TDC while the cam gears rotate.

However if you are using the headgasket to restore deck height (from milling) then it should be close to stock.
