Default 98 GS-R Turbo Build

edit: 08/06/05
Well, it's beeeen along time since I've been at this post, and I didn't want to start a new one. I've debated quite abit about what I want.. and I think i'm finally set.

Garrett GT28RS
Tial BOV
HKS Mani
Walbro 255 pump
550CC injectors
precision/spearco ic
ic piping
waterline
oil lines
dumptube
downpipe
harness
obd1 ecu
turbo timer
blitz boost controller
gauges

neptune tuning

I got a new job about 3-4weeks ago, and I'm making decent money. I have $500 saved up right now.. and by the end of this month depending on business.. I'll have about $1200 or so.. it's slowly coming together.. better to take my time then to rush things :0

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Puts his flame suit on as he hears the chant of, SEARCH SEARCH

I have a 1998 GS-R w/ 70k miles and I'm looking to turbocharge it. I was going to go the all motor route, but it won't make the numbers I like. It's my DD and I'm looking for 250-300hp on stock block.

I've been reading articles and what-not trying to get attain the knowledge I would need to have a turbocharged car. I will still be reading up while you people reply to this post. I just want help in the direction to go.

I've read that Garret T3/T4 would be best for my application. I want to keep my A/C because it's my DD and it gets hot in the summer. How would I attain keeping the AC? I want to use 3inch piping, and with this, I can't use A/C.. What Turbo Manifold would I use to avoid this problem so I can use my A/C?

I'm looking for a custom setup since it would be a lot cheaper.

1. Downpipe
2. Turbo Manifold
3. Turbo
4. Silicone hoses/Clamps
5. Intercooler
6. Various Pipes
7. Oil line for turbo and various fittings for check valves, oil return etc...
8. Blow off valve
9. Wastegate

11.Most important TUNING

Is basically what I need(+ othe odds and ends).

Now, what brands would you go with for the BOV, intercooler, turbo manifold ect.
I've heard great things about drag and revhard.

No, I'm not doing this over a day. I plan to have this all said in done within a year. I just want to be on the look out on deals.

I'm sorry if you've all heard this post a 1000x times, but its just something for me to look back to and learn more. I am reading through a bunch of posts and articles, but if you can help me out first hand and put it in here.. it would help me greatly.

If someone would like to help me on AIM: kevin85193

I would rather piece it together because for me, money doesn't grow on trees. Piecing it together will give me the same benifit as getting a kit would or possibly even better. I will be able to get the best parts and KNOW what each part does and how good it works when I buy individual pieces. I can find deals and get what I want. Thanks for the reply though

They cost about $3,500. I've been reading and I can build custom setup for about $1500

HELL NO!!!

The t3/t67 turbo costs 900 dollars alone so there is no way to build a setup with 1500. It'll be real ugly and won't make much power.

I'm not buying a $900 turbo...
I'd say $400

There isn't much tuning when it come to FMU. A do it yourself kit isn't neccesary cheaper than a prefab kit, it's all depends upon on what you are doing. I bet i can get a car boosted for under 500$ but it will be all junk parts with rubber oil lines, rubber charge pipe, small junkyard turbo and no fmic. But it will be boosted nevertheless, if this is the route you're looking forward to, it's better to go and check out homemadeturbo.com (proud member # 1) However, if you are looking to put a kit together with quality, expect to dish out more than 1500$.

Yeah, I've been reading more into. FMU = bad. But hondata w/ bigger injectors = good. Yeah, I've been looking at homemadeturbo.com . By all means, I'm not going to buy crap products. But, If I can get good products cheaper I would do that.

63ar and 50 trim would spool real quick maybe by 3.5k to 4k full boost. I had a garrett turbo i my ls and i had full boost by 3.2k.

yeah, I'd just rather build my own to get deals ect. The guy who tunes neptune is about 1hr 15min from me. Atleast thats what mapquest says.

Would this suffice.
Garret T3/T04E
.63a/r .57trim ?
http://store.yahoo.com/cheaptu....html

or this one

Garrett-57trim
A true Garrett T3/T4 57trim turbo capable of over 500 whp. Perfect turbo for any street car to make huge horsepower but still be streetable. Comes with 0.50 compressor A/R and 0.63 turbine A/R. Comes with internal wastegate
http://www.thestreetsource.net

This one comes with an internal wastage. Any opinions about internal/external?

leaning towards this one
Garrett-50trim
50trim
This is a true Garrett 50 trim turbo. It comes with a stage 2 wheel in a 0.48 A/R exhaust housing. Spool as fast as a T3 but make as much power as a T3/T4. Comes with an internal wastegate.
http://www.thestreetsource.net

I'm not looking for 500whp.. so this one should suit my needs?

The 57 trim is the lowest I'd go on a GSR. But if you're mind is so set on the 50 trim, go for it.

the 50 trim will probably fall out of efficiency range quickly b/c of the GSR head(as rpm increases efficiency goes down). So, it'll be more ideal to get the 57 trim. the 57 trim will be fully spooled by 4500 rpm at about 12 psi. So, spool won't be a problem.

The 50 trim will spool about the same...spool is determined MAINLY by turbine size, not compressor size. (unless the compressor wheel is gigantic)

that 50 trim you have linked will spool very quickly b/c of the turbine size. it's a stage 2 turbine wheel with .48AR turbine housing.

Whereas, the 57 trim turbo has a stage 3 turbine wheel and .63 AR. It'll carry to redline ..

you're going to choke yourself off with that 50 trim .48AR stage 2 turbo.

yeah, you're def. right. Sorry about these posts, I learn something new every second. Just people been telling me to go with 50 and 57... but, 57 is def. ideal with a gs-r because of higher redline ect. Now just have to find a nice place to buy it or find a deal in classifieds
