85k on my gsr too many miles to JRSC?
I know you guys love turbo, but I am def doing the JRSC of the two. Its what i need, and its the right $. So, having said that, is 85k too many miles to start boosting my babe? I already have all the preventive maintenence, axles, timing belt, waterpump, etc etc. I am curious if anyone knows of anybody who did this mod so late in a cars life before. THe motor is strong and alreay has the basic bolt ons blah blah blah....i'll let you guys talk now.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: 85k on my gsr too many miles to JRSC? (boost killz)
if i replaced my clutch at 50k with another stocker - how long you suppose my clutch will last with the added power? (assuming the stock 6lb pulley)

It depends, too many variables to make a good guess. It could last a week, or a year........depends on your driving style as well.

If you killed a stock clutch in 50k on a stock engine, you'll probably be replacing it again in LESS than 50k with JRSC.
Oh and I went turbo at 100,000 on my GSR and don't think it has been a problem; now I'm at 115k.

First do a compression check.. you should be around 215-225psi per cylinder.. maybe a little more.. but none should be more than 15psi away from each other. 85k miles was around when we installed the DRAG III kit on my friend's GSR. The car has 99.5k miles on it now and still running strong with 261whp at 5.8psi!

Yea I turbo'd my D16 @85k miles.. just did a compression test again @ 95k miles, still nearly 100% what it was b4 turbo (like 2psi difference).. a well maintained motor, er well, well maintainted Honda can go a LONG ways..

85k
oil pump, timing belt and jrsc after the comp. test if all is fine
oil pump.... better to be safe
timing belt.... sure its a lil early but during the install your in there anyway somewhat.
jrsc... cause sometimes ya need a lil boost (psssst let some of the people talk you out of the jrsc and go turbo before its too late)

Re: 85k on my gsr too many miles to JRSC? (4dGSR at work)
Turbo = more money and tuning than I want to spend
Turbo = lag
I just want low end grunt - and about 40-50 more hp. nothing crazy. If i had a newer gsr i might consider the turbo. i'm not flaming it, its just not what i need right now. but i do agree that it is prob a better alternative long-term.

im going to jump back in here
the jrsc is costing?
lag issue? smaller turbo
jrsc lowend grunt = more frequent clutch replacement.....careful
go jrsc... i know my boy's sohc jrsc'd delsol ate a couple R's....fact!!!

Another thing to remember is that a lot of people have wierd drivability problems with the JRScuteil they spend 300-600 dollars on the extra electronic packages that JR sells to fix the problems they failed to address in the first place. You can have a nice INTERCOOLED turbo kit that will run well out of the box for less than you'll spend on the JRSC to get it running 50 hp above stock.

Actually, if you want a mild turbo kit.. I'd get the Greddy and not the Rev-Hard. The Rev-Hard has a larger turbo which causes more lag... and since you're looking for low-mid range power, the Greddy's 18g will spool faster and still provide good power. Plus the Greddy kit is fairly affordable! Make sure you get a FMIC though.

Re: 85k on my gsr too many miles to JRSC? (dbman96)
Boom, yeah even a tuned Greddy turbo kit with a good exhaust will kill a JRSC on the same motor. I do not hate the JRSC, but I think they could hhave taken more time and designed a much better product than what they have.

Hmm.. i know I'm biased, but I don't think that a tuned Greddy turbo'ed GS-R will kill a JRSC'ed one.
Don't the Greddy GS-Rs put out < 220whp at stock boost?
And... I forget his name on the board, but Mike Marsey has a JRSC'ed ITR running 8 pounds or something and he runs 12s at the strip. Something to think about.
Oh yeah.. and if you want a more JRSC friendly bored... check out http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-bin/for...r=40&SUBMIT=Go
One last Q, how do you turbo guys prevent the car from running lean while boost at part throttle when the ECU is still in open loop? Or does boost not really come on at part throttle?

Re: 85k on my gsr too many miles to JRSC? (CKim)
I see partial throttle boost all the time. With a stock kit using say a Vortech FMU, it does the same thing as a JRSC.
We don't get tip in detonation because boost is created BEFORE the stock MAP sensor. On a JRSC setup, the stock ECU thinks you're still deep in vacuum when you are actually creating positive pressure. It should be sending 0 vacuum to the ecu, not vacuum... stock ecu injects less fuel because it thinks you are not getting much air.

Re: 85k on my gsr too many miles to JRSC? (dustin)
Ahh... makes sense now. I think. Hehehe.
Meanwhile, I'm using a mod to fool my ecu into going closed loop as soon as I hit boost. Keeps the mixture from going lean at tip-in.
Yup... I must admit... there are some electronics that you're going to have to get with the JRSC to make it run really well.
